Diversity, equity, and inclusion strengthen our firm, broaden our understanding of our clients, and give us the opportunity to work with colleagues and clients from every background. As another outspoken woman, I appreciate my colleague DJ using her voice and her platform as a partner in a large law firm to advocate. And sincerely: if you or anyone you know supports anti-trans laws, now is the time to dig deeper, learn more, and get on the right side of history on this issue. Read a book by a trans author about their lived experience navigating bigotry against them. Put yourself in the shoes of a parent whose child is trans, who is happy and whole living their gender like any other kid, but who can’t use a bathroom or play sports with their friends like any other kid. Imagine finally navigating the complexities of our health care system to find the best practices medical care for your health and your body, but to have access blocked by legislators who’ve enshrined bigotry into law. We don’t have to tolerate these cruelties. It’s a choice. We can all do better and I hope we will.

As a legal rights trainer, I pour my heart into enlightening underprivileged women about their inherent dignity as humans and citizens. It's a beautiful yet daunting task, for I can't help but wonder: are we merely painting an illusion of a better world for them, or can we truly lead them there? In our sessions, I passionately advocate for their rights, emphasizing their recourse to justice in the face of violations. But then reality hits hard. I see the fear in their eyes as they ponder where to turn when the very systems meant to protect them often fail or worse, turn against them. Inheritance, a beacon of hope for many, becomes a double-edged sword. While society proclaims it as a woman's right, it condemns her when she dares to challenge familial injustice in court. Where does she turn when seeking justice means risking ostracization and abandonment? And what of the brave souls who muster the courage to file an FIR against their own kin for unspeakable acts of domestic violence? In a world where family honor often outweighs a woman's pain, where can she find solace and protection? Even the fundamental right to employment, enshrined in our constitution, becomes a battleground for gender equality. When a woman asserts her right, her very livelihood, her marriage, her sense of security are threatened with divorce. How can she pursue justice when the cost is her very existence as she knows it? These questions weigh heavily on my soul as I stand before these women, knowing that the path to justice is fraught with peril. Yet, in their eyes, I see resilience. I see the flicker of hope that someday, somehow, they will find their way to a world where their rights are not just words on paper, but lived realities. And it's that flicker of hope that keeps me fighting alongside them, knowing that together, we can spark the change that is long overdue.

I've been crafting a guide aimed at empowering mothers and fathers who find themselves amidst the intricacies of family court proceedings. This guide provides insights into recognising your rights and identifying your choices, particularly when self-representing and facing challenges from biased or unethical legal professionals. These professionals often show resistance to change, clinging to an established culture that primarily serves their own financial interests. The lack of significant, positive reform stems from the naivety of many parents unaware their rights were neglected. Vulberable Mothers and Fathers unacquainted with their family's legal rights, and unaware of the legal obligations and responsibilities of the lawyers involved get exploited. This handbook aims to equip everyday individuals with the knowledge to protect themselves. It aims to offer strategies that could prevent lawyers dragging out proceedings to increase costs often resulting in a forced sale of the family homes to cover the inflated legal fees, Our children did not consent to forfeiting their inheritance. At the recent American Bar Association (ABA) Midyear Meeting, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Center hosted a critical strategy session: "Developing an Action Plan for Equity and Fairness." This interactive discussion tackled head-on the organized efforts to normalize inequity that directly conflicts with the ABA's core goal of promoting full participation across the legal profession and justice system. From state voting restrictions to curriculum bans to attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, marginalized groups face escalating threats in the wake of the SFFA v. Harvard decision. As summarized in the session, the ABA must lead in combating these attacks and reclaiming the DEI narrative. Key takeaways include repositioning messaging around "equity" and "fairness" rather than the co-opted term "diversity." Data-driven campaigns dispelling misinformation and highlighting systemic disparities are essential. Tangible actions like a year-long social media blitz, CLEs on DEI policies, and increased amicus briefs were also recommended. The ABA DEI Center is committed to this strategic offensive to ensure the promotion of equal opportunity.
