Faculty Careers & Employability Manager - Science and Engineering, The Manchester Metropolitan University
The sun shone in Manchester yesterday for our Science and Engineering Education Away Day. Really enjoyed catching up with colleagues across the Faculty – and meeting some new faces too. What did I takeaway? ☀ Be a 2%- er: Strive towards those traits that 2% of the population exhibit who are consistently happy and successful (see cool postcard!). Live brilliantly and you’ll take good care of yourself, as well as inspire others around you. Thanks, Art of Brilliance! ☀ Delve deeper: What is the problem, what are the causes, what are the ROOT causes? What can we influence and what will have the most impact? ☀ Everything is connected: How can we ensure the themes of connection, inclusion, support and autonomy are incorporated into careers work. How can we ensure students feel seen and noticed. Everything is pointing towards the importance of peer-to-peer and providing the 'space' for connections here. It was great to work with colleagues to unpick what 'Employability' means across Science and Engineering - and contribute towards our Student Value Proposition too. Many thanks to Lisa Simmons and colleagues for organising a fantastic day - and to all the speakers and facilitators for their insights and energy! #science #engineering #education #careers #employability #ManchesterMet

ICYMI: "Northeastern University, once considered a safety school, now rivals Ivy League institutions with its low acceptance rate of 5.6 percent due to its career-oriented academic model. The Boston university offers students up to 18 months of full-time paid work experience, significantly enhancing job prospects post-graduation. Nearly 95 percent of Northeastern students are employed or in graduate school within nine months of graduating. Other universities, such as Drexel and Georgia Tech, are adopting similar co-op models, with institutions like Wayne State University exploring this approach for engineering majors." https://lnkd.in/gFKV7Snb?

I am delighted to announce that Research England has awarded the University of Greenwich just over £9 million for our research proposal, ‘Multi-Scale, Multi-disciplinary Modelling for Impact’ (M34Impact). The grant will support the expansion of two award-winning research teams, the Computational Science and Engineering group (CSEG) led by me and my deputy Dr Andrew Kao and the Fire Safety Engineering Group (FSEG) led by Prof Ed Galea. Our vision is to expand and unify our world leading Multi-Disciplinary and Multi-Scale Modelling expertise through AI-enhanced High-Performance Computing, to tackle societal challenges. Core to this ambition are mathematical models, computer simulations, and bespoke software, developed to predict physically accurate outcomes that address a wide range of challenges. Building from our core disciplines, we will be linking three cross-cutting themes: (i) Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) focused on lighter, stronger materials for transport and aerospace (especially targeting recyclability, low waste and energy efficiency), (ii) Safety and Security (S&S) which will take large-scale disaster, fire, and evacuation modelling across scales from cityscapes down to street level using real-time interactivity and (iii) Digital Cities, where realistic 3D models of complete cityscapes (with London as a first target) coupled with long range environmental model assessments, will guide fact-based policies and responses both to protect cities and population from disasters and to support policy decisions such as the implementation of Low Emission Zones. Over the first two years of the grant, we intend to expand significantly our research effort and research teams, through the employment of 10 new full-time research staff and 17 PhD students. We will be looking for ambitious and talented researchers in materials modelling, environmental protection, fire or evacuation modelling, or software engineers with interest in AI, virtual or mixed-reality, or high performance computing. If you are one of these, or if you are interested in undertaking a PhD in any of these areas, keep an eye for announcements on https://lnkd.in/eHdSfjU2

something for you ?
Job opportunity! Are you interested in timber structures and the circular built environment? I will be hiring a PhD researcher on an exciting project about the circular use of underutilised wood sources like reclaimed and city wood. As a PhD candidate you will combine structural design, computational design and prototyping, learn lots about the intriguing qualities of wood and work with many interesting people through a multi-actor approach. You will join my research team and the ReStruct Group | TU Delft of the Department of Architectural Engineering and Technology and will collaborate with The Green Village and a wide network of consortium partner across Europe. Apply before 1 September through the online submission portal: https://lnkd.in/eQ55GYWJ Please share with your network to help us find suitable and motivated candidates #PhD #Circularity #Timber #Wood #StructuralDesign

👉 You NEED to know this college admission trend. 👈 We are seeing more and more colleges around the country move toward direct admission to majors. This is happening in engineering, architecture, education, and many other programs. What does this mean for your student? The application they are submitting this fall might be their only chance at applying to a particular program. Once they are at college, changing their major during their sophomore or junior year might not be possible. This is why your student must be zeroed in on their future career goals. Want a free resource to help? Check out our resource to learn about the untold truth about college major-specific admissions. Comment or DM the word MAJORS to get the resource.

With prospective students visiting this week, I want to highlight some things that I am really appreciative of in our PhD program in Engineering Education here at The Ohio State University! 1. Community-Centric Approach: We believe in the power of community. Our program is more than a series of courses; it's a network of passionate individuals committed to pushing the boundaries of engineering education. Together, we create an environment where ideas flourish and collaboration is second nature. 2. Interdisciplinary Dialogue: Embrace the diversity of thought! Our community values the cross-pollination of ideas from various engineering disciplines. Engage in meaningful conversations that challenge traditional perspectives and pave the way for groundbreaking solutions. 3. Inclusive Events and Initiatives: Beyond the classroom, we host a myriad of events and initiatives to bring our community together. Workshops, seminars, and social gatherings create opportunities for networking, collaboration, and fostering lifelong connections. #EngineeringEducation #PhDCommunity #CollaborativeLearning #FutureEngineers #phdlife

Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at Princeton University School of Engineering and Applied Science
Grad School Anyone? I had the pleasure of speaking with undergraduate summer research scholars at Princeton Engineering on Paving a Path to Graduate School. The scholars were engaged and asked great questions as we dispelled myths such as: A PhD is expensive; you need to be a straight A student; you need perfect GRE scores, and you need a master's before pursuing a PhD. It's amazing how prevalent these myths are and they prevent promising students from considering grad school as an option. One bit of advice I give to students is that while the application process is not rocket science, it is helpful to take advantage of support and guidance to navigate the application process more smoothly. Speak with faculty, graduate students you know, and take advantage of programs such as Princeton Engineering's Pathways to Graduate School to help you create competitive applications where your strengths shine through.

Update. We received 64 applications (so far). I am happy to see almost 19% are from non male applicants (all equally welcome, just checking for various aspects of diversity in the pool), but disappointed to see that as I start reading them in detail, most do not match the position at all. It wastes a lot of time needing to open up the packages just to find out the person has no education or research experience in engineering design - what the positions are about.
