One of the most iconic vehicles that everyone will recognize is the Jeep! There are many iconic cars that were made famous by TV shows and movies. And there are iconic vehicles that stand out over time. But there are few vehicles that just about everyone will recognize immediately, at first sight. The Jeep is one of those vehicles. Originally the Willys-Overland MB, it was commissioned for the U.S. military to fulfill the need for a light, rugged and versatile reconnaissance vehicle during World War II. We have not been able to reach a consensus of where the name ‘Jeep’ originated, but there is no doubt that the modern descendants, the Jeep CJ and Wrangler, epitomizes the all-around utility of this wartime utility vehicle. From Willys to Ford to Chrysler, the Jeep maintains the heritage that was born during a time of great need. That's a lot of drama in the tech world over the weekend - as we head into American Thanksgiving, we've seen two extremely high profile leadership changes. Sam Altman, removed from OpenAI. My LinkedIn is flooded with commentary about this, and I have nothing interesting to add. Kyle Vogt resigning from GM/Cruise is big news in my industry, as Cruise is one of the two standout companies pushing fully driverless cars, and has been offering public rides in several cities in the USA. The trigger moment was a tragic accident that a Cruise vehicle did not cause, but did not react appropriately. Since then, there's been a rapid fall in the fortunes at Cruise, leading to Vogt announcing his resignation today. Some say that Vogt's startup hustle mentality led to the culture of carelessness at Cruise, and that's where the problems stem from. I've only met Kyle once, and he struck me as incredibly focused, intensely mission-driven, and very, very smart. It's hard to imagine Cruise achieving any level of success without his founder attitude. Was there a future where Cruise could have gone slower, safety focused, yet still grow? I think we've seen that future already - as Alex Roy commented on the Autonocast podcast, Argo AI was this company, and they were not rewarded by the market, with investors reluctant to put in capital to a company that seemed quieter and less aggressive than its peers. As we watch this unfold, the question has to be: for a revolutionary technology like self-driving cars, what is the way to operate successfully? Is this a case where the porridge had to be "just right"? Or is there no way a VC-backed company can execute against technical, market and capital risks?

For those of you trying to make sense of the Cruise situation, I recommend this thoughtful and balanced Forbes article from Brad Templeton, whom I chatted with in a Lyft plying the streets of Little Tokyo LA last week. Some key points: -      It was the omission of critical information about the incident, not the incident itself, that led to the DMV’s decision to suspend Cruise’s permit four weeks ago. -      The real failure was in the culture of holding data closely and revealing only what they felt they had to. Cruise pushed too hard too fast. -      General Motors, Cruise’s parent, paused production of the Origin, the 6-passenger shared autonomous shuttle that I personally believe still holds tremendous potential to shape a better mobility future. What I really appreciate about Brad’s perspective is that it acknowledges the reality that autonomous technology can make our streets safer – and with 43,000 people dying on US roads each year and 1.3 million globally, we have a lot of room for improvement. Let’s not throw the life-saving baby out with the messy deployment bathwater.
