📷 Cobalt’s ‘Out’ and About event last Friday organised by Kate Peers-McQueen and Ciarán Nicholl - but why do we celebrate pride events? Celebrating Pride events in corporate spaces is crucial to foster an inclusive and supportive work environment, and ensure our LGBTQIA+ employees feel valued and respected. We also aim to bring awareness and understanding among all staff, and foster allyship. At our event, we tried to give back to the community by supporting queer-owned small breweries and brands, purchasing products from Luv Jus and PROUD Beer. Trying to give back to the community can be hard if you don’t know where to go, but there is a company trying to fix this. ‘Everywhere is Queer’ is an app that has documented over 500 queer-run businesses across the globe. Fostering inclusivity and support doesn’t stop on the 30th of June, and within Cobalt we champion inclusivity everyday, not just internally but within our clients also. We speak to decision-makers across the real estate industry daily, and with the support of our Head of Inclusion, Megan Bond, our team are well-prepared to consult with our clients on inclusive hiring practices to ensure everyone entering a business can feel comfortable. #Pride #Pride2024 #CobaltCares

News Xtend and News Corp Australia were delighted to celebrate #PrideMonth, embracing this year’s theme of compassion and courage. In recognition of Pride Month, we had the honour of listening to an incredible speech by Holly Ransom. Holly shared insights on harnessing diversity for better business outcomes, furthering our impact as storytellers. Holly, named one of Australia's 100 Most Influential Women, recipient of the US Embassy's Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Leadership Excellence, and chair of Pride Cup Australia, is dedicated to eradicating LGBTQIA+ discrimination in sporting clubs. Following Holly’s inspiring speech, an amazing panel of News Corp Australia employees discussed the role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) in their daily work. Here are some key takeaways from today’s event: - 2.4 million, or 10%, of Australians are same-sex attracted - 32% of LGBTQIA+ individuals are out at work - A mere 0.4% of philanthropic funding goes to LGBTQIA+ causes, with some organisations having an annual budget of less than $10K So, how can we support and apply what we've learned? 1. Psychological Safety: It's essential to foster an environment where everyone feels safe. Ensure team members understand expectations and feel comfortable asking for help. 2. Active Listening: Create spaces where everyone can speak up. Regularly assess if all voices are being heard and find ways to include quieter team members. 3. Be Observant and Challenge Yourself: Reflect on who you naturally gravitate towards and how you interact with everyone. Today, I find myself reflecting on the profound lessons embedded within the vibrant festival of Holi, which holds deep significance for me and many of us. Unity Through Diversity: Holi transcends boundaries, bringing together people from varied backgrounds and cultures. It serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity and inclusivity, where differences are celebrated rather than shunned. Embracing Joy and Happiness: The playful hues of Holi symbolize the arrival of spring and the boundless joy it brings. It's a time to let go of inhibitions, spread cheer, and cultivate an atmosphere of positivity and happiness. Forgiveness and Renewal: The ritual of smearing colours signifies forgiveness and the shedding of past grievances. It offers us a chance to start afresh, mend relationships, and foster a culture of understanding and empathy. Promoting Equality: Regardless of caste, class, or gender, Holi unites us all on a level playing field. It serves as a potent reminder of the importance of equality and the need to break down barriers that divide us. Celebrating Imperfections: Through the kaleidoscope of colours, Holi encourages us to embrace our imperfections and celebrate individuality. It's a liberating experience that reminds us to break free from societal norms and express ourselves authentically. Honouring Nature and Environment: Holi's connection to nature reminds us of our responsibility to cherish and protect the environment. By using organic colours, we pay homage to the beauty of our surroundings and advocate for sustainable practices. Creating Lasting Memories: Holi is not just a festival; it's a treasure trove of joyful memories and experiences. It reminds us to cherish the moments of laughter and camaraderie, weaving a tapestry of memories that endure a lifetime. Let’s walk the talk on diversity and inclusion for real. I had the great pleasure to discuss important questions with the Volvo Group V-EAGLE network for LGBTQAI+ members and allies earlier this week. In a nutshell: 👉 Why should LGBTQAI+ diversity matter in the workplace? - Because everyone should feel safe to come to work as who they are, feel safe at work, respected, and be included. 👉 In 2024, do you think our society has reached full inclusion in the workplace already? - No, unfortunately, in my view more work on this is needed. 👉 What tips can you give to people to become more inclusive colleagues and leaders? - Let’s respect everyone for who they are and include them. It is as simple as that. 👉 LGBTQAI+ people who don’t feel comfortable with being “out” in the workplace, what do you want to say to them? - Sometimes I am sure this can be easier said than done. With full respect for everyone who is not ready, or who does not want to, coming out is a personal choice. But if you want to come out and feel more ready, look for other members and allies – there are many to connect with. And join the LGBTQAI+ community in your workplace, to feel supported but also to support others. I would say that this could be a good starting point. 👉 You have consistently attended the Pride parade in Gothenburg every year since 2017. What was it that made you join the first West Pride parade, and what made you come back every year? - For me as a person, and as a leader, diversity and inclusion really matter. So, when I joined the Volvo Group in 2017, it was very natural for me to also join the West Pride parade in Gothenburg. Since then, many of my colleagues in the Volvo Group Executive Board have joined me. And we can see the number of LGBTQAI+ members and allies in the Group growing every year. Yesterday I presented during the pre-conference on Diversity and Inclusion in Organizational Communication at #Etmaal2024. Thanks to Joep Hofhuis, Joost Verhoeven, and An-Sofie Claeys for organizing! I discussed two related studies on LGBTQIA+ related corporate communication 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 The first study was about how LGBTQIA+ consumers attribute corporate motivations to advertisements and form pinkwashing perceptions, conducted by Tiziana Schopper, myself, and Lukas Vogelgsang. An interesting outcome is that these attribution processes are related to the salience of their LGBTQIA+ identity. The second study was an experimental study with Duch participants on the effect of CSA communication about LGBTQIA+ issues on legitimacy, conducted together with Mark Boukes. Here we showed that CSA can have negative effects, which was related to resistance to a perceived overabundance of attention to LGBTQIA+ people 🌈 🔔 🔔 🔔 I’m looking for LGBTQIA+ participants for further studies, please feel (very) free to connect if you would like to participate!
