Our neighbourhood gardener was at my house over the weekend. We decided to clear overground banana trees, which if we left it alone is tilting into our neighbours home. He shared a story about one of original resident in our neighbourhood who had a thriving bridal makeup business. Every weekend they will be busy with various assignments. They moved out of our neighbourhood to a nearby neighbourhood. He met them recently, and they mentioned to him that the bridal makeup business is very bad now. His conclusion, they should have stayed back since they had better luck here. The new place may not be lucky for them. I took few minutes to process the story and conclusion made. While element of luck may be one reason, I listed out other reasons why the business is not doing well now compared to few years ago. 1. The bridal makeup business is a low entry barrier business. Hence, it can attract anyone to start the business will low investment. 2. It is less regulated business. So it makes it more attractive to enter. 3. Marketing: today they are various medium of marketing...facebook, instagram, and lately tiktok. So is is now easy to sell your business, especially when it is B2C. 4. The growth rate of indian population is declining slowly, hence market is limited, while number of sellers increasing. This will lead to lower price. Despite all this challenges, there is always ways to improve. I shared the story of a realtive of mine who started this business many years ago, had a shop in Cheras area,needed to give up the shop, stuggled with the business but she reinvented herself and today she does makeup for local dramas and also foreign indian artist coming to Malaysia, and now rub shoulders with known indian artist. So, lets not atribute things to luck alone.
