The Olympic Games, happening in Paris this year, is a spectacular showcase of human spirit and athleticism. Every four years the Olympics brings together athletes from across the globe to compete, inspire, and celebrate diversity. At the heart of this iconic event lies the Olympic rings, a timeless symbol of unity designed by Pierre de Coubertin. These five interlaced rings, each representing a different continent, encapsulate the spirit of bringing the world together through sport. The Paralympics, which is an integral part of the Olympic movement, underlines this commitment to inclusion and diversity. As the years have passed, the Olympics have stood testament to embracing diverse cultures, backgrounds, abilities and nowadays even genders and sexualities. As we celebrate the power of sports to unite us and embrace diversity, a few crucial questions arise: - Can we extend this spirit beyond the games themselves? - Can we redefine sportsmanship to encompass sportspersonship, a term that celebrates individual character and integrity? Let's strive for a world where 'sportlike' conduct becomes more inclusive and diverse. #Olympics #DEI #Sportspersonship Image source: olympics.com Image of one of the first logo renditions:

With the Paris Paralympics in full swing, we came across this fascinating article from Creative Bloq on the meaning behind the "Agitos" logo for the games. The word "agitos" means "I move" in Latin and despite the longstanding link with the Olympics, this sports logo remains less known, and looks very different to the better know Olympic rings. The Best Design from the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games 🔥 The 2024 Paralympic Games drew to a close last week, after a thrilling continuation of the athletic prowess and achievement on display at the Olympics. These Paralympics encapsulated more than 4,400 global athletes competing in 549 medal events within 22 individual and team sports. In addition to over two million tickets being sold to events, these Paralympic Games marked the first time ever that every Paralympic sport was broadcast in over 160 countries, marking a new level of respect and appreciation for disability sport and for the 1.2 billion people living with disabilities worldwide. Much like at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Paralympics were rife with savvy design in all forms that thrilled us (almost) as much as the sports themselves. From adaptive design concepts to inclusive fashion, and statement-making equipment, innovative and exciting design at the Paralympics is critical to the Games’ function and to the athletes’ success. A “disability” is socially constructed, after all, and design is one of the keys to addressing deficiencies in society for those with disabilities, which extends into the world of sports. Everyone talking about the Paralympics or shared the success stories or posts over the social media, but still there are people didn’t know the difference between PO and SO:🧐 Misconceptions around the Olympics, the Paralympics and Special Olympics have existed..😅 Quick facts about the differences between the Paralympics & Special Olympics:😉 Paralympics: • The Paralympics refers to the Paralympic Games, a multi-sport event that happens every 4-years (in both Summer and Winter cycles) • The Paralympics are held in parallel with the Olympic Games (hence “para”) (usually about two weeks after). • The Paralympics have specific rules around eligibility and classification for athletes based on 10 eligible impairments types. • Athletes with disabilities who participate in para sports are Para athletes, but you are not a Paralympian until you compete at the Paralympic Games (similarly not every athlete is considered an Olympian). Special Olympics: * It refers to an organisation and sport system, not a single event. * Participating athletes have an intellectual disability. * It happens also every 4 years in both summer and winter cycles. * In this , it uses divisoning and groups athletes based on age, gender and ability and do not exclude based on performance. Hope it helps and save it for later! #sports #olympics #games #paris2024

Have you seen Channel 4 ‘s promo ad for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games yet? Irreverent. Hard hitting. Compelling. At a little over 2 mins, “Considering What?" is the latest of their powerful campaigns that highlight these incredible athletes to challenge patronising attitudes and change perceptions about disability. Replacing its ‘Superhumans’ forerunner, this campaign challenges people to view Paralympians as elite, world-class athletes, not as competitors “overcoming” their disabilities. https://lnkd.in/eikxjzqQ Created by Channel 4’s multi-award-winning in-house agency, 4creative, the film captures the reactions of people as they watch Paralympic sport which, although well intentioned, are misguided and don’t appreciate Paralympians for what they are – world class athletes. Rather than showing the athletes “overcoming their disabilities”, the film depicts Paralympians taking on and overcoming forces such as gravity, friction and time – the impassionate elements and unchangeable forces of our world – that make no exception for any athlete, regardless of someone’s disability. A world-class concept worthy of the world-class sportsmen and women it showcases. Kudos to Channel 4 for their dedication to promoting the Paralympics and for the enthusiastic audience that it has successfully cultivated. Its coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games reached over 20 million viewers, which is a third of the UK population. Additionally, their innovative approach on social media garnered 4.1 million views on TikTok. #Paralympics #Inclusion #Diversity #Channel4 #Respect #GlobalCommunity

The Paralympics was brought to a close with these words from International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons to the spectators in the stadium and around the world: 'You celebrated the start of the inclusion revolution with a Paralympic party in Paris. Together with fans all over the world, you idolised the athletes and were in awe at what you saw. Free from barriers, Paralympians performed to their best. Through sport they showed what humanity can achieve when given an opportunity to succeed. You saw strength in difference. But now it is time for you and society to make a difference. Inspired by sport, I ask you all to be inspired with your commitment to change. Appreciation and applause must be followed by acceptance and action. Changed attitudes must lead to changed views. Words of praise must be replaced by words of conviction. Obstacles must become opportunities. We all have a collective responsibility to use the momentum of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to make the world around us more inclusive. What a Paralympic legacy this would be, not just for these athletes, but the world’s 1.3 billion persons with disabilities that they represent. Beyond 12 days of sport, we must break down the barriers that exist in society. We must enable and empower persons with disabilities to excel outside of the field of play, in education, in employment, in entertainment, in government, in civil society – everywhere! Diversity and difference should not divide us. Diversity and difference should unite us, drive change and make this planet better for everyone.' Let us respond to that call to action.
