Where does a beer fall into the story these days? Beer used to fall into so many slots that it became synonymous with adulthood. Getting a beer after work with coworkers or friends Getting a beer at the game Getting caught (or not) drinking beer underaged Beer pong at college Bring cases of Beers to a BBQ or family event Getting a beer on a shitty day with a good friend to vent Getting a beer as a reward for some hard work Today, the fit is far from seamless. There’s more remote work so you don’t really have ”coworkers” to go out with after work and chances are you’re getting coffee or a smoothie midday. Gen Z prefers cannabis to alcohol so you’re sooner to find a young adult smoking than sneaking a beer. Beer Pong is a dying art form And when I head out to bars or lounges, there are cocktails and shots flowing consistently with the rare sighting of a beer, which usually is going to the person who’s just ordering one to be social with the group. 🍺 this week’s beer/leadership musing: In my first foray into a New South Wales pub I tried to order a pot of their finest. The response was: “Stupid Victorian, we have schooners here” So I ordered a pot of schooner*…. Which didn’t go well either (For non-Australians: ‘pot’ + ‘schooner’ are names for glass sizes, which oddly differ between states) When I finally got my beer 2 more odd things: It tasted a lot like the yeast bombs in Victoria and another patron referred to it as ‘mother’s milk’ - presumably to endorse its distinction? Pureness? I wasn’t sure (and still aren’t) Since that time the choice of beer has broadened considerably and we seem to order schooners or pints. My experience of leadership has similarly developed. Initially it came with different labels, but was expressed very similarly. Nowadays the label ’leadership’ covers all kinds of expressions. Some are outdated. Some have a legacy that is no longer useful. Most of the newer ones are more flavourful + unique. It has progressed to the point that people have a choice and (like craft beer), many are exercising that choice. What’s your experience? Planning a 3 week trip with my wife and two kiddos to Munich to drink über fresh Lager beer this Spring. Going to hit the famous breweries of Munich, head to Bamberg and imbibe world-class Rauchbier, pop over to Bad Köstritz for their eponymous and inimitable Schwarzbier, and maybe, if I'm lucky, my kids will let me pop over to Plzen to drown myself in Pilsner. I've been writing and speaking professionally about German and Czech beer, specifically beer from Munich and Plzen, for coming up on two decades and I am embarrassed to say I've never been to Munich to drink beer, Oktoberfest or otherwise, so I'm finally heading there to try these bucket list beers fresh from the tap at the facilities that make them. My wife, Cindy, is also a Certified Cicerone® so she's super game for the trip. My kids? We'll they're budding beer geeks already, so they're on board as well just assuming there will be plenty of bike rides, park visits and nap time (all of which sound great to me). Here's my question: How can I get someone to fund this beer voyage? Sounds like a joke (get paid to drink beer), but I have more experience writing and speaking about beer than most people have experience even drinking it (kinda makes ya think how much beer I've had to drink to get there.) So there must be someone interested in working with me, right? I'm looking forward to writing and filming my experience, working while I'm there, but find myself inept when it comes to social media (Instagram, Youtube and I'm old enough to think that TikTok is all just dance videos so don't even start on that). But, I have to imagine that I can find some company or entity that would find my experience over there useful. Are there any avenues that anyone would recommend to find a way to fund this trip? Maybe this is naive, but I'll be honest, in my professional career I've found no other way to make money than getting paid to drink beer. And this is LinkedIn, so you all know me professionally and know that's true. So, if past is prologue, the beer community will continue to help me engage further in my only professional ability - drinking beer. Prost!
