In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, I have planned several events to raise awareness on the GWU campus. Most importantly, AFSP GWU will be holding a virtual panel on suicide prevention through a public health lens on September 13th at 12 PM - 1 PM EST. I'm am pleased to say that I will be moderating our panel featuring Deborah Stone, ScD, MSW, MPH of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Jonah Cunningham of the National Association of County Behavioral Health & Developmental Disability Directors. If you are interested in joining our discussion, please register here: https://lnkd.in/d9tQ2K9h to receive the zoom link. #AFSP #StopSuicide

LITE has partnered with the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office to implement a SOFR (Suicide Overdose Fatality Review) Team to effectively identify system gaps and implement suicide and overdose prevention and intervention strategies. This collaborative effort aims to bring together a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including medical examiners, mental health experts, law enforcement, and community advocates, to meticulously review cases of suicide and overdose deaths. By analyzing these tragic incidents collectively, the SOFR Team seeks to uncover patterns, risk factors, and missed opportunities for intervention. One of the primary goals of this initiative is to enhance communication and coordination among various agencies and stakeholders involved in public health and safety. Through regular meetings and case discussions, the team will work to improve the effectiveness of existing programs and develop new strategies tailored to the needs of the community. In addition to identifying systemic issues, the SOFR Team will focus on raising public awareness about the signs and symptoms of mental health crises and substance abuse. Educational campaigns and community outreach efforts will be launched to inform and empower individuals, families, and community members to recognize and respond to these critical warning signs. Ultimately, the partnership between LITE and the Coroner’s office reflects a commitment to saving lives and fostering a supportive environment where individuals struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues can receive the help they need. By addressing these challenges head-on and working collaboratively, the SOFR Team aims to create a safer, healthier community for everyone. #kosciuskocountyindiana #PARTNERED #SoFr #suicideoverdose #suicideprevention #overdoseprevention #collaboration#InterventionStrategies #MedicalExaminers #mentalhealthexperts #lawenforcement #communityadvocate #communication #coordination #improvement #raisingpublicawareness #partnership #SupportiveEnvironment #saferandhealthiercommunity #MilfordIndiana #warsawindiana #casscountyindiana #marshallcountyindiana #stjosephcountyindiana #elkhartcountyindiana #FultonCountyIndiana See insights and ads Boost post Like Comment Share

Workplaces can be crucial in preventing suicides. Mining & #construction continue to have significantly higher suicide rates compared to other industries (see recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, https://lnkd.in/eZNfEa63). Our course can help you equip yourself to support coworkers around this topic: https://lnkd.in/gaKXpJc7 #suicideprevention #workplacesupport #healthyworkplace

Navigating the challenges of #postpartumdepression (PPD) can be a difficult journey for families. As research shows, PPD symptoms can potentially impact: - Mother-baby outcomes: Including infant attachment difficulties. - Child development: Including social-emotional, language, cognitive, adaptive, and motor development. - Partner outcomes: Including higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. If you're providing care for someone experiencing symptoms of PPD, encourage them to speak to their healthcare provider for more information. In addition, supportive resources are available thanks to the work of advocacy organizations like Families for Depression Awareness. Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an updated National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and an accompanying Federal Action Plan. This represents a critical advancement in the work to improve mental health and well-being in our country. We couldn't agree more with this statement by U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy: "Progress is possible, and it cannot come soon enough. Together, we can create a future where support, hope, and well-being are within reach for everyone." It takes all of us! Find the full strategy and action plan below. #nssp #suicideprevention #suicidepreventionstrategy

As specialists at the leading edge of the #SuicidePrevention sector, we’re proud to meet the full demand of the mission to reduce suicide through our support of powerful suicide prevention initiatives from across our portfolio. On #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, we’re spotlighting our amazing stakeholder engagement team for their exceptional logistical and technical support for two high-impact suicide prevention conferences this past June: ✨ In close partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), and the Education Development Center (EDC), #TeamAG provided exceptional logistical, operational, and technical services for a Zero Suicide Convening, bringing leaders together to shape strategies and action steps to scale Zero Suicide for safer suicide care practices with fidelity in healthcare. 💡 Within 24 hours, the team pivoted their support to another powerful SAMHSA engagement: The National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and Zero Suicide Grantee Meeting, a gathering of 150+ grantees from across the U.S. and its territories to implement suicide prevention programs focused on adults—especially older adults, those in rural areas, and American Indian and Alaska Native communities—while addressing the Surgeon General's 2021 Call to Action. We’re proud of #TeamAG’s hard work and the lasting #impact these initiatives will have in expanding equitable access to mental health and suicide prevention services, especially for underserved communities. #SavingLives💜🩵 #SuicidePrevention #Awareness #Hope #TeamAG #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealth #BehavioralHealth #PublicHealth #VeteranSuicidePrevention #EmbraceChange #FocusOnImpact

The New York Times recently highlighted a study of twins that further confirms our understanding of the long-term health effects of childhood trauma on individuals. For example, the study found that "a twin who reported maltreatment was 1.2 times as likely to suffer from a mental illness as the unaffected twin in identical twin pairs, and 1.7 times as likely in fraternal twin pairs." The study's findings also highlight the importance of investment in early prevention and trauma mitigation programs by adding to what Mark Bellis, a professor of public health at Liverpool John Moores University in Britain described as “the increasingly irrefutable evidence that it is going to cost us all a lot less if we invest in tackling” abuse and neglect of children now, rather than “continuing to pay for the epidemic levels of harm” they cause downstream. Daily mindfulness is to mental health what daily teeth brushing is to dental health. CDC, Surgeon General and many others are all saying children would benefit greatly in this 5-10 minute a day practice. Prevention! #Dailymindfulness #youthmentalhealth #wellbeingforlife Inner Explorer
💚We were very excited to hear Dr. Kathleen Ethier, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent and School Health (the lead organization that works with schools), share her visit to several classrooms in Clayton County Public Schools at the The Harkin Institute Wellness Symposium last week! 🧭We are honored to present to the wider audience of DASH at an upcoming Lunch and Learn event. It's so heartening to see major organizations recognizing the crucial importance of integrating daily mindful awareness practices into the school day to support youth mental health and well-being.
