Intra-moot court competitions and how they taught me more than any other moot Moot courts teach one a lot of things, and while research and advocacy forms an important part of it, so does initiative, cooperation, understanding and alertness. I am yet to come across a moot court story wherein everything went perfectly, and I think in this lies essence of it, the challenges a moot court poses. While national moot court competitions come with thorough preparation and the supervision of professors and mentors, it is through the intra moot court competitions that I think the perseverance and confidence of a student actually gets tested, because while it is quite an art to convince the judges, it is just intimidating to stand before them when one has not had any experience of doing so. I would not be in a position of regarding my experience at NASCENT and ASCENT so successful if it were not for my partner, Devyani Makhija. We realised the importance of coordination and working separately yet together through our preparation for both the moots. While we kept our expectations to the bare minimum and only intended to give the moot our best shot, our selection in the moot court society and the subsequent moots we participated in made us believe that we had something to offer, and by the time we sat for the next moot, the experiences we had gained as a part of the society helped us navigate our preparation in the right direction. The insights from this preparation is what makes me believe that we will always be mooters..

📚 Episode 4- How to Prepare for Moot Court Competitions: What Worked for Me (Part 1) Over the last few years, I’ve had the privilege of participating in 9 moot court competitions—from national to international levels. Each one has taught me valuable lessons, pushed my limits, and helped my teams reach the finals, win awards, and even secure the best memorial. Through it all, I’ve learned that while mooting can be tough, the right preparation can make all the difference. Here’s a detailed guide based on my personal experience that helped me and my team succeed in these competitions. 1️⃣ Understanding the Problem In my first moot, I learned the hard way that understanding every aspect of the case is key. The problem isn't just a bunch of facts—it's a carefully crafted puzzle. -Multiple reads are a must: I always read the problem three or four times before making notes. This helps me uncover hidden details that could make or break an argument. -Identifying issues early: Break the problem down into clear legal issues. Once my team and I have clarity on the issues, it becomes easier to build solid arguments. -Embrace the ambiguity: In one of my moots, the judges loved ambiguous facts because it tested how well we could argue from both sides. Always be prepared to tackle questions that may challenge your interpretation. Pro tip: This is very controversial but usually in national moots we twist the moot proposition in our favour. For example- draw attention of the judges stating “Your Lordship, please look at page number 5, paragraph 8 of the moot proposition” and then build your case from there on how your client has been wronged. Show them all the instances where your client has been wronged throughout the memorial without mentioning the other side unless asked to. It shows that you have gone through your proposition thoroughly. 2️⃣ Researching: In depth, and not just superficial When I started mooting, I often found myself lost in the sea of research. But over time, I learned that depth matters more than breadth. -Be selective with your sources: I learned to prioritize quality over quantity. Sure, I’d explore various sources, but I’d stick to those that offer the most insightful precedents and reasoning. -Create a research guide: I now break down research into issue-specific sections with each team member assigned to specific issue. We organize it so we can quickly make the memorial before the deadline arrives. Pro tip: Even if you know xyz case is not very similar to your case, still mention them in the memorial, just don’t make reference to it during your oral pleadings. However, make sure that they are related to your case to some extent. Don’t just keep on listing cases without any nexus. A lot of citations also show that you have done a lot of research, and usually in all such moot court competitions some marks are also allocated for research. This is going to be a VERY long post. Stay tuned for the rest of the parts! ✨

🌟 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 🌟 Choosing the right moot court competition is crucial for your growth and success in the legal field. As someone who has had the privilege of judging moots recently, I've noticed a trend worth highlighting. To my fellow law students in their initial years of law school: before diving headfirst into any moot court competition, take a moment to thoroughly assess the moot proposition. It's disheartening to see talented students, still in their first or second year, tackling international moots without a solid understanding of the proposition at hand. 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, participating in moots is not just about showcasing your skills but also about engaging deeply with legal issues. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨 𝐭𝐢𝐩: Always prioritize understanding the moot proposition inside out. If you can grasp the essence of the problem and the laws involved, then you're ready to take on the challenge. So, before you sign up for that next moot, 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟: Do I truly comprehend the moot proposition? Am I prepared to delve into the legal intricacies it presents? Choose wisely, my friends. Your moot court journey starts with a solid foundation of understanding. 📚⚖️ Law Pulse #lawstudents #mootcourts #legaleducation #tipsforsuccess #lawschool #competitions
