This year’s show was actually worth the wait. A year and a half after OpenAI launched #ChatGPT and shocked the world, Apple finally threw its hat into the ring of artificial intelligence. And its entry into AI got the important things right. It offers valuable lessons for every executive who’s struggling to figure out what their company might do as well. In my latest Forbes article, I delve into the key aspects that make Apple’s approach work. 💡 First, Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence isn’t a copycat of Microsoft or Google. Its approach leverages a handful of unique strengths the company brings to the table. Like Apple, companies would be wise to take a moment and clearly identify the assets and capabilities they bring to the table when formulating their AI strategy. 💡 Second, having leveraged what makes the company great, Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence also helps solve critical challenges to the business. How Big are the AI Industry now? What do you think about AI’s future? Just four of the companies that capitalized on the innovations of the departed — Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Meta — register a market capitalization of $7+ trillion. They all are major promoters of the AI "innovations", regurgitated large language models (RLLMs), mixed with mixing training data materials without any understanding, massive IP theft and hallucinations, confabulating and constant catastrophizing. As to Statista, the market size in the AI market is projected to reach US$184.00bn in 2024. The market size is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2024-2030) of 28.46%, resulting in a market volume of US$826.70bn by 2030. Now, as to the Economist estimates, the AI will generate $20 billion in revenue for AI “leaders” Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft in 2024, just 2% of their combined revenue. With a total of 305.63 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, Google generates $237+ billion just from its major ads stream: Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Play: $175.03 billion (56.9%) YouTube ads: $31.51 billion (10.3%) Google Network ads (includes ads on Google's partner sites): $31.31 billion (10.2%). AI is that it will either save us/kill us all. It has done neither. Staggering increases in shareholder value mixed with IP theft, hallucinations, and constant catastrophizing. It’s as if Rupert Murdoch got married, for a sixth time, to SkyNet. I think “Apple Intelligence” is more than a great brand move; it encapsulates the company’s strategy. Take something invented elsewhere; make it more consumer friendly, easier to use, and more reliable; mix in world-class industrial design; and print billions. Great article from Benedict Evans on Apple's move into AI, and what it might mean for the space. Interesting to see more thinking that GenAI might very well be a commodity - a technology - rather than a product on its own. And, as the article points out, if that's true, then the only true moat for the AI sector is capital. Here's something for the smart kids: Apple believes that AI is not a product; it's a technology to be used in various applications (sounds right since that's what is happening now). It also posits that all AI training on the same things means no differentiation, hence the only moat is money (sounds right again!). On GenerativeAI, "is this a new general purpose tool, where one product from one company does the work of hundreds of pieces of software from hundreds of companies, or is this a generic technology that will enable features inside products from hundreds or thousands of companies?"
