Draw your own conclusions... This interview with Sky News raises a number of key points. The individual involved aside it's worth taking a moment to think about what a hiring process is really about. I have sat on lots of interview panels and I have reviewed the CV's and interviewed Tens of thousands of individuals over the past 23 years. There has been a regular feature in the hiring process as to why some candidates land the job and others don't. The phrasing changes every time but it's along the lines of "they just have something", "My gut instinct is", "they're not what I set out to find but I really like them and think we can make this work" The AI evangelists would point out unconscious bias and see this aspect of hiring as a negative, but I think it's more than that, and the right hiring panel & Process negates that argument. AI can only work with the tangibles in life, but human connection and the energy that makes a winning team requires humans to see it and feel it. With the clients I work with on a freelance retained basis, I often work from their offices or as an embedded member of their remote teams. One of my criteria for new clients is that intangible buzz, that feeling of a connected team pulling in the same direction. We are all more than a list of skills and experiences. If you are going through a tough job search currently, don't lose sight of that.
