Did you know more than a third of the LGBTQ+ workforce in the UK have hidden who they are for fear of discrimination? I recently read this number and it got me thinking as to how we as a company we could help to make businesses a more welcoming place. Personally, I believe the best way to create acceptance is through education and that is why I decided to create a fun tool that can be used by companies to help create an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ staff members within their organisation. This doesn't just help create a better working environment for staff, but also ensures any potential LGBTQ+ clients feel welcomed too. This is why I have created An LGBTQ+ Escape Room. A fun and engaging virtual game with an educational twist. You get the chance to meet famous activist and members of the community and learn about their story as you solve cunning puzzles and move through the game. I'm very lucky that my boss, Jo Smedley, Experience Designer is a fierce ally and a champion of diversity in the workplace, but not everyone is that lucky. You might not think there are any LGBTQ+ members in your office, but that may not be the case. Maybe there is a member of the 35% of the community who doesn't feel safe enough to express themselves openly. Make sure your office is showing support as we enter Pride season this June! Tangible ways to empower LGBTQ+ employees all year round: 1️⃣ Formalize Mentorship Programs Mentorship can strengthen personal and professional development and psychological safety for LGBTQ+ employees. It can also improve upward mobility and senior representation. This also improves talent attraction as 80% of LGBTQ+ students say visible LGBTQ+ senior role models significantly influence their job offer acceptance (source: myGwork - LGBTQ+ Business Community). 2️⃣ Enhance Parental Leave Policies Ensure they support all family structures, including same-sex parents and use inclusive language. For example, explicitly include provisions for parental leave for adoptive parents and offer equitable benefits regardless of gender or sexual orientation. 3️⃣ Continue Engaging with LGBTQ+ Communities Sponsor and support LGBTQ+ organizations like Out for Undergrad, The Trevor Project, GLSEN, and PFLAG National. Stand out from the crowd of performative organizations through authenticity and consistency year round. For example, Alvarez & Marsal, a recipient of Diversio's Workplace Impact Award, fundraised $1,210 for The American LGBTQ+ History Museum. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Roger Wilson to run an expert session at our Vistage UK meeting yesterday. We learnt so much from this informative session, we asked the difficult questions and were honest about how our own belief systems might be holding us back. Diversity isn't just about visible differences; it's about honoring every individual's unique identity, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. Embracing LGBTQ+ diversity enriches our workplaces, fostering creativity, empathy, and a culture of acceptance. Almost two weeks into Pride month! How’s it going? Made any tangible moves for progress yet? Amidst the vibrant celebrations of Pride Month, one film recommendation that deeply resonated with me was Call Me by Your Name. Beyond its poignant portrayal of love and self-discovery, the film offers a beautiful tale of a 17 year old Elio understanding his sexual orientation. What took me by surprise is the revelation that his parents were aware and in fact orchestrated the process of self-discovery and exploration. As organizations celebrate pride month and show their commitment towards supporting those from the LGBTQ+ community I wonder how many of us are championing this in our personal spaces. The movie offered valuable insights: 💛 Allyship begins at home. 💙 Belonging is when you feel accepted for who you are. 💜 Acceptance is hard but can be most rewarding to lead fulfilled lives. 👉 Organizations are wired to reward sameness - same college, same previous organization, same club, same style of dressing, same sport. 🔻 The cookie cutter landscape of our organizations and teams needs to welcome people for who they are rather than continue to promote sameness. 🌈 How can you contribute to promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity in your workplace this Pride Month and beyond? #PrideMonth #LGBTQ #Allyship #Intersectionality #Belongingness #Inclusion #Diversity #Equality

🏳️🌈 June is Pride month. So many LGBTQ+ employees are still experiencing discrimination and prejudice. In fact, according to research carried out by Randstad, questioning over 2,000 members of the LGBTQ+ community, 47% of employees say they’ve experienced some form of discrimination and 39% feel more isolated than they did five years ago. I find this shocking and sad. Shocking that there is still so much misunderstanding and lack of respect of people’s differences, and sad that many in the LGBTQ+ community feel they need to hide their true selves. There is still a lot of work to do. We need far more dialogue and awareness for managers and leaders to help everyone better understand and appreciate one another, support each other, and work to their strengths. By fostering this, you’re helping to create a peaceful, caring and far more successful working environment for all. Many smaller businesses may find it hard to find the time to investigate the huge subject of inclusivity in the workplace.
