VISION, MISSION, PURPOSE & VALUES CHANGE LIVES It was her final year of secondary school. She was smart with huge potential. She was lost - overwhelmed by all the options, emotions, challenges and experiences that early adulthood brings. School bought a great social life. Academically she was failing - miserably. The hope of any acceptance into tertiary education was dismal. I met with her. We discussed a vision, mission, purpose and values needed to make the the first three happen. She wrote them down. She wrote copies and put them in important places where she’d see them. Together we actioned them - she as the driver, me as the guide. We made a plan and along with her parents and two support friends shared agreements were made to commit. Despite her track record being dismal we decided to look forward and made it a rule to only use statements that aligned solely to her Vision, Mission, Purpose and Values. For ten months her vision, mission, purpose and values were actioned. The following January when results came out, PURE JOY was all over her face. She had succeeded and went on to become successful in her career. There’s a fine line between success and failure. When any education or corporate organisation takes its vision, mission, purpose and values from ‘the paper to the people’ they are creating synergy for success. Sending the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (Queensland)’s 50 Policy Futures Graduates out into the public service this week to start their rotations through departments. My advice to them last week: 🍍Public service is a verb. 🍍Political views are ok, even strongly held ones, as long as you leave them at the door and act impartially in your role. 🍍Give frank, fearless and sound advice. 🍍We serve the government of the day, but our first loyalty is to the people of Queensland. 🍍Process is part of public service- we deal with public money after all. But those who stand out use process to find a way to done and get results. 🍍There’s meaning and purpose in a public service career. But sometimes it takes a few role changes to find it. The direction we need to go today.

Dear Social Work Students on Placement, Developing your practice by applying what is taught at university and gaining knowledge and experience is more important than the tick-boxing portfolio completion exercise. Yes, it is still a requirement to evidence your learning and practice, however, solely focusing on tasks to satisfy the portfolio requirements is not how you should spend your time whilst on placement. We, who are entrusted with shaping your practice, are more interested in seeing how you communicate and interact with internal and external clients, how you use and act on your own initiative, how you collate and analyse information, how you recommend and implement interventions, how you enable and empower families to make positive changes and maintain positive progress, and how you apply theory to practice. This is what we look for and want to see. Do all this and I guarantee you that you will have what is needed for your portfolio without even thinking about it. Too many times we see students so preoccupied with gathering evidence for their portfolio that they neglect to develop their practice and become the best Social Worker that they can be. You need time take time to learn. If you find it hard to not make your portfolio the priority whilst on placement, speak to your PE or supervisor and develop a strategy that will work for you. I often use my own 80/20 model with the students I mentor, support or supervise. I challenge them to spend 80% of their time on placement developing their practice and 20% working on their placement.
