Canopy’s 2023 Hot Button Report is here and features exciting news in MMCF Sourcing for fashion brands. 🌲👚 Here’s a brief summary of the progress in this year’s report: 〰 MORE Green Shirts – This year 20 of the world’s MMCF producers, or 71%, are now rated green shirt — they represent a full 54% of global production. 〰 Increase in Next Gen – Next Gen textiles are on the rise, with a 29% increase in circular commercial lines. There has actually been a doubling of commercially available Next Gen MMCF lines in the past 24 months. 〰 Producers for Conservation – Producers representing 78% of global MMCF production signed onto a letter to all member states of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity, urging the protection of at least 30% of the world’s land area by 2030. We congratulate producers and thank them for their work in making their supply chain more sustainable, and we thank all of our CanopyStyle partners for their collaboration in protecting forests. Currently, CanopyStyle numbers nearly 550 global brands representing 1 trillion USD in annual revenues. Brand commitment has been an impressive driver of change. 550 global fashion brands have made a pledge to protect at least 30% of the worlds land area by 2030 by signing the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity. It’s unfathonable to think that old growth forests or any forests are being culled to produce viscose when up to 70% of new clothing produced this year will end up in landfill or discarded in the next 5 years. As a passionate marketer and advocate for sustainable fashion, I regularly search for best practices. Today I want to share the 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐜𝐨-𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 by ETERNA Mode GmbH. The company, renowned for manufacturing shirts and blouses in Passau, Germany for over 160 years, is deeply committed to sustainability. One month ago, Eterna 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐬 to 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩 e-commerce 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 with 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 created from 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞. Eterna is the first, and currently the only, company to utilize its production waste rather than those supplied by Siebek, the provider of the tying machine which uses recycled cords to seal packages automatically. The initiative will 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞 over 𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, with a positive impact on the community and the environment. The news has been shared on LinkedIn and Eterna’s website blog. It has not been published on the official social media pages. My 2 cents. If your company is launching valuable initiatives in sustainability too, I highly recommend 𝐦𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, particularly 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬, for the following reasons: 1. According to Deloitte, 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 are among the 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭. 2. Forbes reports that 𝟖𝟖% 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 remain 𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 to 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 that 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬. 3. There are at least two notable cases of successful green marketing campaigns on social media: • Patagonia experienced a 𝟑𝟎% 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 following their 2011 campaign "Don't Buy This Jacket"; • Pandora's transition to 100% recycled silver and gold in 2023 resulted in an 𝟏𝟖% 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐐𝟏 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 amidst a globally declining jewelry market.
