I was chatting with someone the other day who asked my advice regarding a career switch. When I asked for more detail, they described feeling stagnant in their role, even though they've asked to be given more challenges and growth opportunities. The requests to the manager went unanswered. Leaders -- if your employees come to you asking for more challenges or responsibilities, allow yourself to have the conversation. Even if you don't think the timing is right, use the conversation as a moment to set expectations and outline a growth plan. If you don't, that employee is going to look for a growth opportunity somewhere else which leaves you unexpectedly trying to fill a hole on your team, ultimately taking extra time, money, and resources. Approaching teams with a growth mindset is one of many things that delineates LEADERS from MANAGERS. In an increasingly fast-paced landscape, it can be tempting to focus only on chasing the next new trend or shiny innovation. As Ron Ashkenas piece in Harvard Business Review cautions, not all strategic pivots are created equal – leaders must strike a delicate balance between the need to change course, while evaluating what long-term value this pivot would bring to their organisation.   Successful organisational change is incumbent upon leaders working with their teams to closely assess the potential value of any strategy pivot.
