The Mission to Seafarers Q2 2024 Seafarers Happiness Index has revealed an increase in overall seafarers’ happiness levels. However, the survey has revealed concerns over the emergence of two classes of life at sea for seafarers. It has shown that there is reason to believe there is a ‘digital divide’ for accessing the benefits of modern communications and connectivity at sea, as well as different levels of training and preparedness for new fuels and technology for crew on different types of vessels. By working together with industry leaders, ship owners, managers, and charterers, the Mission aims to find actionable solutions that enhance seafarers’ overall well-being, safety, and quality of life. Their commitment to safety at sea involves utilizing the right gear, undergoing rigorous training, and adhering to stringent safety protocols. To mark this year’s Day of the Seafarer, the IMO is encouraging seafarers to share their best safety tips at sea. Seafarers are invited to post a picture of themselves in their working environment, showcasing how they maintain safety on board, using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea on social media. Be creative and share how you contribute to maritime safety, whether through the equipment you use, the training you’ve received, or how you adapt to technological advancements and innovations to stay safe on board. This year, as we celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, it's important to highlight the critical issue of safety at sea. Seafarers often work in hazardous conditions, and their safety should be a top priority for all stakeholders in the maritime industry. To mark this occasion, here are some #SafetyTipsAtSea to help protect seafarers and ensure their well-being: 𝟭. 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁: Always have a life jacket within reach and know how to use it. It could save your life in a man-overboard situation. 𝟮. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: Before setting sail, check the weather forecast and stay updated. Being aware of potential storms can help you prepare and take necessary precautions. 𝟯. 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹: Regular maintenance can prevent mechanical failures and accidents at sea. Ensure that your vessel is in top condition before every voyage. 𝟰. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀: Fatigue can impair judgment and reaction time. Be aware of your physical and mental limits and take breaks when needed. 𝟱. 𝗕𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀: Have an emergency plan and ensure all crew members are familiar with it. We celebrate our brothers, Sisters, husbands, wives and friends in this noble professional. Indeed you are our heroes of the global blue economy and lifeblood of International trade. Your resilience, dedication and professionalism are all appreciated. Being a Seafarer comes with a lot of sacrifices, commitment, trust, challenges and hard work. We salute your courage, and determination. Many atimes you are away from your family for months, striving and working hard on the rough ,turbulent and high seas. A quick review of this year's theme is Navigating the Future - SAFETY FIRST. You can not talk about Safety in the Maritime Industry without SOLAS Convention. What does SOLAS stand for? Safety Of Life At Sea. SOLAS Convention in its successive forms is generally regarded as the most important of all International treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships. SOLAS Convention was adopted in 1914, in response to the sinking of the TITANIC boat disaster. The 2nd Version was adopted in 1929 while the 3rd and 4th versions were adopted in 1948 and 1960 respectively. The 1st version passed in 1914 in response to the sinking TITANIC which described numbers of lifeboats and other emergency equipment along with safety procedures, including continuous radio watches. The SOLAS Convention sets out the minimum standards of how ships should be built, equipped and operated to ensure their safety. This includes guidelines for the structure machinery, electrical equipment, fire protection, life saving appliances, radio communications, navigation safety and cargo carriage. The adoption of SOLAS in the Maritime industry was triggered by the need to ensure safety regulations. Elements of SOLAS covers aspects such as stability, electrical installations, fire protection etc. The SOLAS Convention is one of the four (4) most important pillars of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) instruments, which regulate questions relating to Maritime Safety, the other three are the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (MARPOL), the Convention for Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) for Seafarers and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). All of these Conventions are geared towards Safety of Life at Sea. I encourage everyone to embrace SAFETY today. As we celebrate this year's International Seafarers' Day,, remember SAFETY FIRST. It begins with you and I. So be safety conscious while you navigate through the seas, oceans, remain focused, determined, dedicated and professional. Safety first. It is as simple as that. Seafaring is a high-risk occupation. But that can never be an excuse to relax on safety issues. Instead, it should push us to always strive for safer ships and ways of working. Today is the International Day of the Seafarer. The International Maritime Organization has chosen to focus on safety at sea as the theme for 2024, and we wholeheartedly support this theme. Safety is the most crucial aspect of our work. We won't transport your goods if it means a too high risk for our colleagues at sea. At Grieg Star, we live by the motto, 'Work with safety to come home safely.' This saying, which has been ours for close to ten years, underscores the crucial role of our seafarers in making our industry safer. They are not just employees, but the very heart of our safety efforts. Therefore, our seafarers' safety tips are integral to our work. Warning - please bear with the reuminations of an older gentleman… 😆 Yes, i have “kee chiu-ed” to be in the very first batch of SSVP - and these are my thoughts… A wise man once told me “You don’t know what you don’t know. So obviously there is some level of trepidation. How will this go? How much involvement is this going to take? What will be the teething challenges? Will I actually be ready when called? But then I take a breath and remind myself - my services won’t be needed if every sea space user is responsible enough to keep him/her/themselves safe on the water in the first place. We all need to bring safety upstream. We are a nation of islanders. We must embrace that heritage and the responsibility that comes with that heritage. We are the only ones that can keep ourselves truly safe at sea. Learn how to swim (in the sea as well as the pool) Learn how to read tidal streams. Learn how to read the weather. Learn how to say NO to going out to sea when you are not physically, mentally and emotionally ready. Learn, learn, learn. The tripartite relationship of Government, industry and community can only do so much. As individuals we too need to carry our own weight in being safe at home, on the streets and on the water. Come on guys. We got this.
