Information about sodium-ion batteries and their ecological impact and availability in the EU, as alternative to Lithium ion batteries: Sodium-ion batteries (SIB) are a type of rechargeable battery that use sodium instead of lithium as the main active material. SIB have some advantages over lithium-ion batteries (LIB), such as lower cost, higher safety, and more abundant and sustainable raw materials¹². However, SIB also have some challenges, such as lower energy density, shorter cycle life, and lower efficiency¹³. According to some studies, SIB have a lower environmental impact than LIB in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and resource depletion¹³. This is mainly due to the lower environmental burden of sodium extraction and processing compared to lithium and cobalt, which are scarce and critical metals¹³. However, the environmental performance of SIB also depends on the specific cell chemistry, the recycling process, and the application scenario¹³. SIB are still in the early stages of development and commercialization, and most of the current research and industry activities are focused on stationary energy storage applications, such as grid integration of renewable energy sources¹²⁴. There are some European projects and initiatives that aim to develop and test SIB for different use cases, such as NAIMA², TIAMAT⁴, and Enerpoly¹. According to some sources, a French company (TIAMAT) is looking to start selling SIB in the next two years, while a Swedish startup (Enerpoly) has received a grant to build a factory to manufacture zinc-ion batteries, a type of SIB, by 2025¹⁴. I'm happy to share my experience in January 2024 at "CONSTELLATIONS" Universitas Sumatera Utara 2024, a national essay competition focused on Innovation and the Contribution of Sustainable Chemistry to Environmental Issues. In this competition, I had the honor of presenting my paper titled "Ti3C2 MXENE NANOMATERIAL AS AN ELECTROCATALYST IN THE HYDROGEN EVOLUTION REACTION PROCESS FOR A CLEAN AND RENEWABLE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY". This research explains the role of Ti3C2 MXene nanomaterials as electrocatalysts in the hydrogen energy production process. This research demonstrates the importance of sustainable chemistry and further innovation to prepare for Net Zero Carbon in 2050. Participating in a Q&A session with USU chemistry professors specializing in inorganic chemistry and renewable energy was an honour. #RenewableEnergy #NetZero2050

These are precursors based on platinum group metals (PGM). Thrilled to share our work at #RSCPoster2024! 🌐 Here's a sneak peek into our poster on "Furfural vapor-phase hydrodeoxygenation to 2-methylfuran, a 2nd generation biofuel, over TiO2-supported Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts." Our study navigates the intricacies of catalyst selection for a continuous process of furfural hydrodeoxygenation, with a focus on exploring first-row transition metals for economical and efficient catalysts. A noteworthy highlight is the strategic use of Cu-Ni bimetallic combinations, aiming for optimal specificity and selectivity. 🔍 In-depth characterization analyses and investigations into process parameters unveiled intriguing insights. The gradual incorporation of Ni showcased improved dispersion of Cu species, coupled with an increase in the surface area and porosity of the bimetallic catalysts. Elevating the Ni content resulted in complete furfural conversions and an uptick in 2-methylfuran selectivity. The optimal outcome materialized with the Cu-Ni bimetallic catalyst featuring equal amounts of Cu and Ni (10%Cu-10%Ni), showcasing the highest 2-methylfuran selectivity at a robust 84.5% at a mild 200°C temperature. This composition emerged as the standout performer in their study🌟 Moreover, the catalyst exhibited remarkable stability during long-term evaluations, maintaining conversion and selectivity values above 90% and 70%, respectively, even after 15 hours. 🕰️ Your valuable insights matter!
