Learned industriousness is a fascinating concept. It's essentially about how praise and recognition for effort can create a positive feedback loop, where the act of exerting effort becomes inherently rewarding. Instead of needing external motivation to keep going, individuals find themselves naturally drawn to the task at hand. Adam Grant's idea of being a "humble narcissistic leader" is intriguing too. It suggests finding a balance between confidence and humility, acknowledging one's strengths while remaining open to feedback and collaboration. This hilarious post got me thinking about some youngens we've been working with in a blighted part of town. They have been marginalized (in part) by a society that judges by history and the outward appearance of things. That society has tried to "help" over and over again using the same model. A model that can only help the few who tend to look good in it. Sadly, what looks good to those who judge by appearances often lacks depth and true strength. Give the underestimated the opportunity, VISION, and your time and energy and you may begin to be able to see past what looks good. If we apply ourselves for their sake, we may discover a new way that actually changes us all for the better. I read a quote recently that has given me some focus in this regard. "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To Change things, build a model that makes the existing model obsolete."
