Resource Justice is Robert Schalkenbach Foundation research initiative, where we foster research into the sustainable, efficient, and equitable use of natural resources in the US and abroad. Our goal is for the rich bounty provided by the natural world to be shared equitably among all members of the human community, ensuring that social progress is both inclusive and resilient. Aiming to serve as a valuable resource for community stakeholders who share this objective, much of our work focuses on translational research. With our network of talented researchers, we also conduct novel research into pressing social issues including urban land use & housing issues, land & property taxation, value capture of natural resource rents, and climate change & the environment. https://lnkd.in/gkBU9Tzb

To care for urban forests, conservancies, cities, and park agencies must utilize a whole spectrum of funding sources—from bond acts to tax revenue. But which of these sources is most effective? We released our “Funding the Care for Urban Forested Natural Areas” report this week which outlines the challenges and benefits of various funding sources, based on data collected from our #ForestsinCities network. This graph illustrates the eight most common funding sources from within our network, and their corresponding “impact score.” The top three sources for a majority of cities were grants and foundations, mitigation funding, and tax revenue, which had the highest impact. The more we can understand what avenues are most successful and effective, the better we can serve our urban forests! Read the report: bit.ly/fic-ffna

Since its release last year, our report on Benchmarking Case Studies on Public Participation in Spatial Planning has continued to resonate with urban planners and policymakers worldwide. This study offers a thorough comparative analysis of how Australia, Chile, South Africa, and the United Kingdom have integrated public participation into their spatial planning processes. By examining these diverse contexts, the report highlights key insights for creating urban environments that are more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable. It underscores the critical role of participatory planning in legitimizing political decision-making and fostering meaningful dialogue between the state and the public. The report also showcases a variety of regulatory and governance models that can guide legal and institutional reform. As UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) continues to provide technical assistance and advisory services to Member States and local authorities, this publication remains a crucial resource for enhancing public engagement and driving forward sustainable urban development. https://lnkd.in/dw6w-3vg #UrbanPlanning #PublicParticipation #SustainableDevelopment #ComparativeAnalysis #UrbanGovernance #LegalReform #UNHabitat #PolicyMaking #PublicEngagement #UNHabitatPLGS Remy Sietchiping Anne Amin Samuel Njuguna Valentina Ricca Zoe Gabrielli
