Last week, we had the honor of hosting Chancellor Juan Salgado and the City Colleges of Chicago Leadership meeting at McDonald's Headquarters. I'm proud that our organizations share a commitment to advancing opportunity – whether that’s through education, employment or a combination of the two. It’s why we launched our U.S. Archways to Opportunity program in 2015, which offers college tuition assistance, English-language skills, a high school completion program and so much more. Through this program, McDonald’s and its franchisees have increased access to education for more than 82,500 people and awarded more than $185 million in tuition assistance. Now, in partnership with City Colleges, we’re creating new opportunities through a McDonald’s apprenticeship program in Cyber Security. In fact, our first three apprentices – who are all completing programs at Wright College while working at MHQ – were able to join us to share more about their experience. Registered apprenticeship is a proven model for workforce, yet Mississippi has yet to grasp the concept. The word “apprenticeship” is written in several Senate and House Bills but dead ends there. Quality training for advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, education, health care, and more is accomplished daily through apprenticeship programs. If your company wants to build a quality workforce by employing underserved, underskilled, veterans, youth, justice challenged, disabled, and others let’s discuss a registered apprenticeship program.

Apprenticeships are amazing opportunities to start a career in an organisation or a field of work. I am incredibly proud to have started my career in the Council as an apprentice. Having the qualification to work towards, with modules that support and compliment the work that you're learning on the job really helps with the transition from education to professional work. It also also encourage learners to ask questions and develop a better understanding of the organisation and the job. I truly believe that apprenticeships are the way forward and should be promoted more to people of all ages, but especially younger people. So during apprenticeship week, it would be great to ask any apprentices that you in your organisation, what their apprenticeship is, how they're finding it and then to encourage them that they're doing a great job--it can really help build confidence. 😊
