The other day, I was chatting with a friend who's been pitching non-stop for weeks. She was frustrated, hating the 3-minute format because she couldn't figure out how to cram in all the feedback from investors and mentors. I get it—it's a common frustration. How do you address the problem, solution, customer segment, finances, etc., in just 3 minutes? My advice? Start with a story. Tell a story about the customer, the problem they're facing, and how much money they're losing because of it. A story doesn't have to be long. When was the last time you asked someone for help outside of work hours? It's a powerful thing. In this case, I shared a simple idea with people on Linkedin - the B2B community in Porto. I had a feeling there was a demand for it. There are so many people in Porto in B2B. But no community. I started having my first virtual conversations. And the ideas just started flowing: -informal meetups and relationship-building. -support, help, and provide free value. -organizing presentation meet-ups so people can practice presenting and sharing value at the same time. -potential partnerships. -potential deals to be made. -introducing B2B to Porto Business School's recent graduates. -building a startup ecosystem. -connecting investors and founders. But also there is the reality. 👇 Loving the idea is one thing. Turning this idea into reality is something different. “What’s the big deal?” 😱 I was purposefully blunt 15mins into a startup’s strategy retreat in Batam over the weekend. They’re not a portfolio company but the founders kindly invited me to join. ➡️The Big Deal question is a method I use to shock people’s system into separating the trees from the forest. Many times, teams in a strategic discussion can’t get out of problem-solving mode: ⁉️“How can we craft a better sales message?” ⁉️“How do we entice freemium users to upgrade?” ⁉️“How should we differentiate ourselves?” ➡️I start by classifying these as Small Deals. To be clear, I have full respect for Small Deals - execution is critically important - but talking about Small Deals during strategic discussion will confuse the agenda and take your discussion in circles 🔄🔄🔄 Big Deal questions, on the other hand, help align your team and shape your North Star: ⁉️“Why is our existence important for the world?” ⁉️“What are our non-negotiable values?” ⁉️“Why do we deserve to be successful?” Many times, your team will find the answers to Small Deal questions on their own once the Big Deal is clear. What’s your Big Deal?
