Olivia was not "normal." Neither her death nor her life matched my picture. Maybe that's what made her so beautiful... in order to know Olivia, I had to take my eyes off of my picture and experience her directly, just as she was. (I mention Olivia, but this could be a powerful thing to try with a spouse, children, or friends.) From the latest edition of my weekly newsletter. Each one explores freedom, rest, and deeper connection in life. You can see more of this week's newsletter (and sign up to get it in your inbox) at nathanpeterson.net

Inspiring films with powerful women in sales don't exist. Until I stumbled on the Netflix series 'Self Made' about Madam CJ Walker: "I was married at 14. Had my daughter at 15. Widowed by 28. Working on the cotton plantation, I had no time to care for my hair." Wow, I just finished episode one and I'm hooked! Her journey from the plantations to making millions with her hair growth crème is jaw-dropping. What’s her secret to sales? Here’s what I learned: 🟢 Dream Big: Walker aimed as high as Carnegie and Rockefeller. 🟢 Know Your Ideal Buyer: Walker focused on Black women who had lost their hair and confidence. 🟢 Empathize Deeply: Walker understood their pain better than anyone. She shared her story, validating their journey of suffering and dashed hopes. Her buyers felt truly understood. 🟢 Paint a Vision of Success: Walker inspired them to buy by sharing her own transformation story and showing them how they could achieve it too. Is anyone else watching this? What resonated with you?

This is a reminder to be open with people but not to blindly follow what they do. You are the books you read, the films you watch, the music you listen to, the people you spend time with, and the conversation you engage in. Choose wisely what you feed your mind. We are social animals; we meet new people and engage in conversations with them. Be aware of what you believe in because you may believe it simply because of your community. Feed your mind with rational ideas and engage in meaningful conversations. #librarywithoutwalls #lifelonglearning #criticalthinking
