Last week, I had the opportunity to lead workshops on controlling arousal, stress, and anxiety in elite sports at the University of Surrey lecture hall. This session was part of my time working at the Nike Sports Camp in Surrey, an international high-performance sports camp, focussing on football & basketball. It was fascinating to see how different cultures perceive stress and anxiety in sports, offering unique and enriching perspectives to our discussions. Let’s secure the mental well-being of our athletes. Most of us who have probably not even reached half way to the winners podium in any sports discipline, at any level, have been quick to pass judgements on the ‘whys’ and ‘why nots’ of athletes’ performances who have gone on to represent their countries at the Olympics. From Vinesh Phogat, Imane Khaleif to Simone Biles, and many in between, have to fight mental, physical, political, emotional, financial and social challenges; overcome all of that and face the world. It takes just a minute to pass comments. Instead, why should we not rise together and fight to secure the mental well-being of sportspersons, who deserve so much more than comments on their failures. To paraphrase what Federer had said : A huge lot is required to appear ‘effortless’ while performing at the highest levels.
