If cash offers a 5% return right now, through money market funds or CDs, why risk your money in equities and bonds? It’s a common question we’ve heard from clients in this current interest rate environment -  and this The Wall Street Journal chart helps provide a clear answer. Since 1990, equities have consistently outperformed cash holdings before, during, and after Fed rate hikes. While cash may offer great yields at the moment, knowing when to move in and out of the market into a cash vehicle such as a CD requires you to: move before the Fed does, anticipate global investor reactions, and generally predict the future with great accuracy. Obviously, that’s not a realistic expectation to have of yourself. History tells us the market rewards long-term investors who can stay focused on their strategy regardless of short-term events and market movements. Think how big and liquid the Treasury bond market is? If the 10 year Treasury moves like it has ( down 50 bps plus) then the market is telling you what is to come. At some point in 2024 the Fed starts to lower the Fed Funds rate. Investors need to plan now for what is to come 12 months from now. The risk reward on high quality short term bonds is the best it has been in a decade ( not money market).
