Strategy 1: Invite prospective students to campus with career fairs. Campus events are an especially effective way to form relationships with prospective students. They offer the opportunity for students to see your institution, interact with faculty, ask questions, and engage with your resources firsthand. Not to mention that in a post-pandemic era, face-to-face connections make even more of an impact. Plenty of community colleges already host career fairs, where students can connect with representatives from local businesses and explore their career options. Marketing these events to prospective students lets them see firsthand the kind of relationships that your institution has built within the local job economy, and gives you a chance to show off your vocational programs and internship opportunities. Let’s take a moment to look back what we have been doing so far. #1 Major and Career Fair “M&C Fair” is an annual educational fair organized by FUSAAC since 2009 with a purpose to serve as a platform where high school students and university freshmen receive substantial information to make important decision on choosing the right major and building a good career paths via the physical fairs in order to help them make decisions for their higher education journey and career path. M&C fair helps to guide student to get to know available majors in university through online videos and podcasts or small-scale workshops with partner universities. Besides that, it also helps to guide student to explore available career by the professionals and expert in each field through small-scale workshop and talkshow where students could get to know more about career and profession and career development. The Naveen Jindal School of Management Undergraduate Internship and Job Expo last week was a fantastic experience that allowed me to gain insight into the nature of career fairs and prepare me for the many career fairs I will attend. My professor, Denise C., played an important role in preparing for the career fair. Her guidance on cover letters, resumes, and elevator pitches allowed me to prepare well beforehand. The opportunity to talk to the recruiters at the career fair allowed me to obtain first-hand exposure to body language and professional communication skills. The diversity of job opportunities at the fair covered a wide range of skills and majors. While there weren't many opportunities for first-year students, the exposure and interaction with the recruiters were significant steps toward future career-fair interactions. I had the honor of speaking to Ashley Rojas, a Human Resources Generalist from Southwest Solutions Group, and I'm grateful for how she answered all my questions transparently and effectively! One crucial piece of advice I would offer future career fair attendees is to balance your career aspirations and the opportunities that come your way. While it's important to have a clear idea of the fields you're interested in, it's equally vital to keep an open mind about internships and jobs to which your skills can be applied. Flexibility is key. Also, I would like to point out that effective time management is essential. Plan your visit to the fair and use your time wisely to engage with as many recruiters as possible.
