This week, our Walnut Creek and Concord Medical Centers participated in drills to test emergency plans and our ability to respond to sudden surges in patients needing emergency care. Facilitated by Contra Costa Health and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), about 100 volunteers played the role of patients exposed to a hazardous chemical. Collaborating with our external response partners in these types of exercises allows us to stay connected and synchronized for real-life critical situations when they arise. Thank you to all who participated in this successful drill! These events are crucial for improving our emergency preparedness and ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees and our community. #EmergencyPreparedness #HazMat

In today’s world, preparedness is key! Mock drills are an essential tool for enhancing emergency response within organizations and communities. They provide a platform to practice response procedures and ensure that everyone knows their roles during a crisis. As a healthcare partner to our clients, we conduct mock drills at their locations to align our staff with corporate teams, ensuring everyone is prepared to take necessary actions during an emergency. Recently, we held a mock drill at one of our client locations focused on effective responses to cardiac arrest situations. Our nursing staff and corporate teams worked seamlessly together, successfully executing the correct steps to take in such critical moments. This initiative reinforces our commitment to safety and readiness, and we’re proud of the teamwork demonstrated during the drill! Together, we’re creating a safer environment for everyone. Fun Fact Friday: Do you know why the Star of Life has six branches? The six branches of the star represent the six main tasks executed by rescuers all through the emergency chain: Detection: The first rescuers on the scene, usually untrained civilians or those involved in the incident, observe the scene, understand the problem, identify the dangers to themselves and the others, and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety on the scene (environmental, electricity, chemicals, radiation, etc.). Reporting: The call for professional help is made and dispatch is connected with the victims, providing emergency medical dispatch. Response: The first rescuers provide first aid and immediate care to the extent of their capabilities. On scene care: The EMS personnel arrive and provide immediate care to the extent of their capabilities on-scene. Care in transit: The EMS personnel proceed to transfer the patient to a hospital via an ambulance or helicopter for specialized care. They provide medical care during the transportation. Transfer to definitive care: Appropriate specialized care is provided at the hospital.

Earlier this year our team presented at the Association of Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Professionals (AHEPP) Annual Conference. The content is still as relevant today as it was in February. What is your organization’s emergency preparedness plan in the event of a mass casualty incident? Do you have the ability to manage an unexpected surge in demand for morgue facilities? What is your current capacity? Will your plan maintain the integrity of the deceased and the safety of your employees? What resources will you use in a mass casualty incident and how do you acquire them? Can you increase your cold storage within 24 hours? As a mobile mortuary and equipment manufacturer, we applaud healthcare emergency managers for their vital role in crisis navigation, and we stand ready to support their efforts with tailored solutions for efficient post-crisis operations.

Many government agencies require fire extinguishers in every commercial building. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics show less than 1,000 people per year die from injuries sustained from a fire in a commercial building in the United States. However, according to the American Heart Association 436,000 Americans die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)! If only our society was as well-equipped to address cardiac related emergencies as it is to extinguish fires. If we had a 3-minute response time with confident and well-trained first responders with a proven life-saving AED, we could effectively increase the survival rate of SCA by at least 50%. I would be honored to develop a customized plan for you and your organization.
