Proven winners rely on one simple trait: Resiliency The great Rocky Balboa once said: “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” Early in my career, I struggled to overcome setbacks. Here’s an example: My first assignment was a 10,000 SF industrial tenant lease requirement. Multiple tours, dozens of buildings, finally we found a perfect fit. After months of negotiating, the landlord requested proof of the tenant’s revenue. The tenant (my client) refused to provide. Immediately, the deal caved. I started to question the assignment. My senior broker said, “They will find a space with or without you." After a year of persevering, I had closed my first deal. Tip: To grow resiliency, face adversity in small doses through exercise.

Calling all Rainmakers: Yes YOU - the ones with the right combination of hustle and authentic connection to cultivate trusted relationships over an inestimable amount of time with potential clients - some of whom hopefully become actual paying customers. Truly successful rainmakers – those glorious (and glorified) humans who open doors and close deals frequently and with apparent ease - are pretty rare. And hard to know specifically what magical recipe they use to replicate their success on an ongoing basis. Which is why I was super excited to come across a recent HBR Article entitled “What Todays’ Rainmakers Do Differently” (link in comments below) - it's the first time I’ve seen the role being unpacked, dissected and codified. And it’s an excellent rubric for assessing one’s own approach to business development, as well as a great way for managing partners of professional services firms to determine the make-up of their sales/business development/client engagement teams. Definitely worth a read for anyone in the professional services business development world. I’m keen to hear what type of ‘rainmaker’ you think you are – and also, whether you’d be willing to change your style if it meant greater success. Let me know!
