MY 2024 KENTUCKY DERBY GUIDE IS NOW AVAILABLE!
I believe this year’s Kentucky Derby guide is the best I’ve ever produced. In these pages, you’ll find:
THE FINAL FURLONG – Discover which horses are 0-for-43 based on the final fraction of their last race since 1992 and which have produced a positive ROI.
UNDERSTANDING QUIRIN SPEED POINTS – I give you the IVs and ROIs for each of the nine Quirin speed point totals.
TURN-ONS AND TURNOFFS – Find out which horses return a profit and which horses practically never win America’s greatest horse race.
I LIKE BIG WINS, AND I CANNOT LIE – I examine how impactful a previous "big win" is in the Kentucky Derby.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY? – Does a horse's birth month matter? Find out which foaling months produce an inordinate number of Derby winners and which don’t.
UNDERSTANDING SPEED FIGURE CYCLES – Discover the speed rating pattern that has produced zero Kentucky Derby winners (from 38 starters) since 1992 and the pattern that has produced a 43.5 percent ROI.
KNOW YOUR S.H.I.T. – The top four Simon Historical Investment Technique selections have produced 21 of the last 31 Kentucky Derby winners. A $100 bet on each pick would have returned a profit of $16,990.
AI ANALYSIS OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY – I use artificial intelligence to select the top five Kentucky Derby contenders. The results may surprise you!
THE CONTENDERS: A CLOSER LOOK – A horse-by-horse look at the Kentucky Derby field.
PACE PROFILE REPORT – Each Kentucky Derby Guide contains my Pace Profile Report, which includes par speed figures and my speed rations for every (potential) Derby contender.
With the Kentucky Derby happening this weekend, I thought it would be timely to review the 2009 race. As a 50-1 underdog, Mine That Bird won the race over the heavy favorites Dunkirk and Santa Anita at 4-1 odds each. No one gave Mine That Bird a chance and yet the horse won against all odds.
So, you may be wondering, what does a horse race have in common with investing?
You have the same odds at picking a 50-1 underdog correctly as picking a dominant stock! Since 1926, 2% of public companies have created 78% of the stock’s market value as of December 2022.
This is why we invest in the entire stock market because being right is hard.
If you're considering betting the Kentucky Derby odds this year, consider this betting method:
Placing a unit on Fierceness to win the Kentucky Derby (+250)
Placing 0.48% of a unit on the Derby winner to have two words in their name (-150)
By doing this, a bettor would win roughly 12% of their risk from both bets assuming one of the seven that fit this cohort (among the nine Kentucky Derby betting favorites) wins the race.
In other words, at a $100 unit size, you would get back about $17.76 in profit.

This weekend was the Kentucky Derby, and on the historic 150th running of this race, Mystik Dan delivered a breath-taking win, beating second place Sierra Leone and third place Forever Young in the first three horse photo finish since 1947 ended in a 3-horse photo finish.
This year's race marks a unique milestone with the 150th running of the Derby — the first race took place back in 1875.
There are lots of interesting facts about the Derby, with the drink of the race is the Mint Julep, made with Woodford Reserve as the official bourbon for the race. There wasn’t an official trophy for the race for almost 50 years, the first race was in 1875 and the trophy was created in 1924. To this day the Kentucky Derby trophy is one of the only solid gold trophies in the United States. The fastest Kentucky Derby was run by Secretariat in 1973 (1:59.40). The slowest winning time was run by Kingman in 1891 (2:52.25 for the mile and a half). There have been three fillies to win the race.
I love the Kentucky Derby not only because it’s exciting, but also because it always provides important leadership lessons. Here are a few from the 2024 race:
You can win against all odds.
You just never know.
You can’t stop until the end.
This was an exciting race to watch, and even more interesting doing research on the history of the Derby as well as the winner. If you have something interesting to add to the lore of the Kentucky Derby, drop it in the chat. Don’t forget to like, comment, and follow so you don’t miss future content.

What can Jack Gohlke and the Oakland Grizzlies teach us about business? 👀
Listening to the post game interview last night…something caught my ear about this game…💥EXPERIENCE💥
Experience wins games…not talent that comes with blue chip, 5 star, legacy recruits.
Kentucky is loaded with NBA talent, but they bolt for millions after year 1….coining the term “One and Done”. Average age of 19 yearly = NO EXPERIENCE ❌
Not OAKLAND!!! They’re a team of gritty ballers who are older…not NBA bound. Average age of 22 yearly = EXPERIENCE (Jack Gohlke 24)✅
To stay ahead in business you have stay hungry…
Hunger =💥EXPERIENCE💥
The business world isn’t fair…you’ll always be facing a competitor who has a bigger budget, larger staff, better “resume” talent, etc…😩
Want to win?
HIT THE BUSINESS GYM daily with training, industry knowledge, new tech stack, books, podcasts, etc… STAY HUNGRY
Don’t be a Cinderella👊

Five years ago, Jack Gohlke was a redshirt freshman at Division II Hillsdale College.
Last night, he made 10 three-point shots and scored 32 points as 14-seed Oakland upset 3-seed Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.

Cant blame ya, T! I did the sammmmmeeee thing. Secured the bag and shortly thereafter made a huge announcement to the world with my baby boy. The feeling of your firstborn is indescribable.
Kind of like the reaction my wife and I had when I got a product hit out of a case with this 2021 National Treasures Trevor Lawrence 1 of 1 RPA 🤑
We're over here like,"...soooo...baby #2?!" 🤣
(For those of you who are either just catching on, or haven't quite paid attention yet...yes...the collectibles market has seen significant uptick in recent years. We saw a spike around 2008/2009...and then a "Covid Era" growth rate unparalleled by majority of asset driven industries. Once a childhood hobby, sports cards have become a necessary commodity in many investor's portfolios.)
The card depicted in this post came out of a case of one of Panini 3 most upper echelon NBA/NFL licenced products, National Treasures FOTL (First Off the Line). At the time I bought in (close to, if not on, product release day) these cases were selling to the consumer market at premium rates of $28,000 and higher per 4 box case. Each box contains 8 cards, making a case only 32 cards in total. National Treasures boasts a significant portion of the top 10 most valuable cards ever sold. SPECIFICALLY, the hunt surrounds the infamous "Logoman" & "True" RPA (rookie patch autographs). With every card being serial numbered 1 to 99, there a limited cases released each year. 2021 saw a significant demand with 6 or so starting QBs being drafted first round. Some panned out and others have some work to do. In the hobby space, we call the process of determining which will be which early on "prospecting". Some of the names from that class include Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Justin Fields, Ja'marr Chase, and many others. To no surprise, similar to athlete salaries, in NFL products you are soecifically chasing top QBs and T Law proved himself to be the top of his draft class.
Another well recognized sales comp from the same product was Trevor Lawrence's NFL Shield 1 of 1 that sold for $336,000 by Goldin in August of 2022. Ken Goldin is far from a stranger to being behind some of the highest sales in sports collectibles and was nominated for an Emmy for his Netflix Series "King of Collectibles". Season 2 out now. 🫡
⚠️📈📊STAY TUNED: Frank DiNote (the man in charge of private sales at Goldin) and I have been working on something for quite some time now that will be big news for TCA. As soon as semantics are ironed out...you MIGHT just see one of those before mentioned "Logoman" cards hit their premier auction soon. 🤫🤫🤫
Congrats to that man T-Law!
First on his $275MM future with the Jacksonville Jaguars ...
But more importantly on having a lil one on the way!!!
Can't blame ya, T!...I did the sammmeeee thing....secured the bag....and very shortly thereafter had a big announcement for the world. 😇
Good News Friday is here! Now, whether you are a basketball fan or not, an Oakland University fan or not, last night was an absolute lesson in how one identifies where they are and sees the Dream where they want to go as Oakland upset Kentucky in the NCAA tournament, a 14 seed beating a 3 seed and powerhouse. The article I am reposting from Front Office Sports provides an insight to an individual who was a redshirt freshman at an DII school but whose dream was to be on the court with the best. If you follow basketball, this is a Dream, and one that takes what I hope every leader is willing to admit they need:
🌄 Willing to dream - Let lose, dream at work and dream at home, be willing to do it! You did it as a kid, you can do it again! Remember your dreams as a kid, you wanted to be the best at a certain sport, hobby, whatever it was and you would do everything to make it happen. Some of our best inventions and leaders have been those that dared to dream. People love to get behind a Dream!
🗣 Others - This individual, Jack Gohlke, needed coaches, trainers, his teammates, and many others at the university to be successful. Are you willing to let others help you be successful?
👷♂️ Hard Work - There will never be a substitute for this, and I am not talking about being so consumed that you don't have time for your family, others, or have horrible balance. But when you are in the arena, when you are in practice, when you are at work, you are giving your best, because you know the dream is worth it.
Allowing yourself to dream, allowing others to help, working hard, are three great ways to see your life, both professional and personal, go to the next level! Have a powerful day and you have what it takes!
