Amid high degrees of partisan political polarization it is easy to miss what we share as citizens of the United States: The opportunity to pursue our dreams. Marta's use of the phrase "free and open society" reminds me of a remark Karl Popper made in his book The Open Society and Its Enemies: "We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.” In our current context, in my opinion, we could do with more focus on what we have in common, more substantive debate about what policies make sense, and less vilification of the motives of the other side.

From Obama to Vivek Ramaswamy, on both left and right, I can vouch from my own experience, intrusion into lives without respect for people’s preferences, to fit social preferences and trusting machines controlled by interests of men instead of trusting people has become the de facto social norm: A. You belong in your group with Indians, or if you say you are colored, you are “black” because America is black and white. B. Cyber forensics we did cannot be wrong. You must be “paranoid”, the word used, about data loss on your computer despite me being a certified information systems auditor. This psychopathology expects us to embrace the reality of living the lie under Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and its antecedents since 1989. We all know surveillance society is true, especially since Edward Snowden and Havana Syndrome, but withhold ourselves from talking about it lest we be undermining the global “image” of United States as the land of the brave and the free. Bill Clinton who restarted the national conversation on race upon his election in 1993 and took great flak in a public debate from the late Elie Wiesel The Nobel Prize on American racism, and later sexism in 2008 and 2016 in the election of his wife Hillary Clinton, has made Americans of all persuasions, including women, very wealthy by globalization. America has always been separate but equal, with integration and miscegenation a matter of personal preference, and now all the equals also have money. This is also true of the world. They must become the keepers of their brothers in their own groups to close the wealth gap in a nation of equal individual constitutional rights for all. Human beings have a predilection for home bias: your family, your language, your culture, and so on. It is our natural comfort zone with the least amount of work unless you are born inverted in your mind where being biased seems irritable and work as I am. I do not want Jews, European white Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and others to beat themselves up for being normal human beings. All that they need to do leave people like me alone for who I am and learn to talk to each other instead of using poverty and weapons as war. The economic salvation, not spiritual which is to each his own, of the world’s peoples is in global #sustainability. As part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I wanted to bring attention and spotlight some stories that are inspiring, illuminating or highlighting struggles within the community. I love the PBS NewsHour recent story on Gulf Coast Vietnamese Americans reinventing their story in innovative ways that not only pay homage to their culture and heritage but also exemplifying resiliency as shown in the piece. Parts that I found resonated with me was when the artist, Christian Dinh, described how his grandmother's advice on cooking fish was "you'll know when the fish is ready, when the eyeballs turn white" and creating a giant longevity bowl reminiscent of bowls commonly found at family tables (albeit normal size). These were some of the things I've experience in my own Chinese household. The key takeaway this piece threaded through from all these experiences and stories was of resiliency. Whether it is having to leave your homeland to a foreign place to start anew, surviving through tragedy and misfortune only to come back stronger or keeping traditions and heritage alive through arts and culture. It all comes from a place of love and I can see that especially poignant and unique in the Asian and Asian American experience even though we may not verbally express it. It shows through our work and perseverance. I see many of these stories in my parent's journey to provide an opportunity for my siblings and me; and it's this implicit love that makes me resilient in the face of hardship and I hope to come out stronger on the other end.
