UPDATE #3 (06/08/2024): We want to thank the amazing community for their support, please keep sharing and let's gather all the equipment and items we need to get Closet Share up and running. Closet Share is a community-focused program dedicated to collecting local clothing donations, washing and sorting them into tiers, and cataloging them on an online store for community members to access. We provide affordable clothing solutions through a tiered system, with Tier 1 offering free clothing for low-income families and organizations, and Tier 2 allowing the broader community to purchase items at low costs. Additionally, our Bags of Rags program repurposes unusable textiles to prevent them from ending up in landfills, contributing to environmental sustainability. We are excited to announce that we have recently acquired a warehouse to expand our operations. Unfortunately, we did not receive the government funding we applied for, and the warehouse requires some renovations to get it functioning for our program. We need various supplies, and if you have any items that you would be interested in donating to Closet Share, we would greatly appreciate it. We are also always looking for volunteers to help with the growth and building of Closet Share's warehouse. Your support can make a significant difference in our community! Greek Week continues to make a big impact in the local community and this hyper-local storytelling should remain a focus. I think, because we’re at a world-renowned institution, we aim a lot at showing how far-reaching our footprint goes. This story is part of that too—many of those involved will go on to do great things across the world. But, right now, we’re telling a story of students building camaraderie and connecting with where they are at this point in time and with what’s closest in proximity. That doesn’t minimize their impact by any means. So, I think this also shows how important Fraternity and Sorority Life remains to the philanthropy of the area. How FSL creates leaders and constructive citizenry. If you connect those dots, you see that this article tells multiple stories beyond the surface.

Contrary to popular belief, the city of New Orleans does not coordinate, nor fund, Mardi Gras. The city does issue the parade permits, but parade routes, schedules, floats, and funding is all provided by Mardi Gras Krewes. The Krewes are the social organizations that host parades with distinct themes and throws; Some examples are the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus which hosts a sci-fi themed parade, and the Funky Uptown Krewe which hosts a parade promoting local artists. 👽🎶 Some Krewes charge a fee to join (sometimes thousands of dollars a year per person), others require a more stringent application process that involves getting on the good side of the krewe’s elders. There are even krewes restricted by gender, like the Krewe of Endymion (men only!) and the Krewe of Poseiden (women only!). However, it’s not like the city doesn’t benefit from Mardi Gras, far from it actually, because Mardi Gras is said to bring about $1 billion in revenue to local businesses every year. 💸💸 Krewes often double as charitable organizations that provide aid to their communities throughout the year. The celebration also provides year round jobs to the community, like float-builders and temporary jobs, like clean-up crews. Overall, Mardi Gras is central to New Orleans culture, community, and economy! 💜💚💛 So, come down to party and support local businesses! One of the many avenues of outreach our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers provides is our year round Care Package Distributions to #homeless and less fortunate individuals. Our distributions have been our most consistent #outreach project since 2013. Our amazing #Volunteers organize and execute the distributions, alternating between a mobile distribution and a stationary distribution. Currently, we are blessed with the ability to assist an average of 1,500 people per month; in multiple cities, in multiple states! Our goal with distributions since 2013, has been to provide essential necessities to those in need. Necessities that we may take for granted, are viewed as a luxury to those without. Some of the items we hand out include food, clothing, bottled waters, hygiene items, first aid supplies, socks, shoes, books, seasonal items, and lists of resources available in the area. We also utilize our time in the community, retrieving feedback of needs and issues, by those in need. Engaging with individuals, learning their stories, and providing them with hope and acknowledgement. Our distributions continually evolve. Addressing needs, while making available the proper resources. Tangible donations are the lifeblood of our distributions. It’s important that people, especially children, know they are cared for and loved.” In collaboration with the Board of Directors and the seasonal Cheer Board team, Shawna has taken a 100+ year old organization and modernized it to better work exist within today’s charitable sector. Establishing relationships with schools, sports teams and the business sector, sharing our stories and introducing the Cheer Board to a whole new generation of Winnipeggers! Celebrating 105 years of giving this year, The Christmas Cheer Board of Winnipeg has been helping make the season a bit brighter by providing food and toy hampers to families in need across the city. It’s a labor of love for so many volunteers who dedicate their time helping out each season. In 2023, the Cheer Board saw its largest request for hampers to date with over 20,500 hamper applications.
