After last week’s post, one of you asked if I have any other go-to interview questions that you can ask your marketing mix supplier. One such question is: “How do you select parameters for your media transformations, i.e., adstock and saturation?” A common answer, which seems correct but is actually misguided, is to rely on model selection techniques, like cross-validation, to find parameters that balance fitting historical data with predicting future outcomes. Why is this approach flawed? While model selection techniques are great, they aren’t suited for choosing media transformation parameters—because these parameters are intrinsic to the media itself. For example, we know that a highly-targeted Meta ad will saturate faster than a broad-reach TV ad. Relying on “best fit” parameters pushes the limits of what aggregate marketing mix data can tell us, often leading to unrealistic and unreliable results. A better approach is to estimate these parameters separately and apply them in modeling for more realistic and reliable results. It was my first time at Programmatic Pioneers Summit this week and WHAT an event. I was super encouraged to hear brands describe cookie deprecation in the past tense 🙌 Brands aren't waiting for Google to set the pace of change, and are taking control of their paid media using 1P data strategies and collaboration with premium publishers. Standout panel was Ollie Shayer from Boots Media Group and Nadine Warren from ITV talking about the value of clean rooms to do just that. Every brand I spoke with either has already moved, or is planning to move, spend out of OMP in favour of PMP/Direct. This is great progress. Now we just need to find a way to scale and measure that. If only there were a data infrastructure that’s sitting across 70% of the UK’s premium publishers and 100% of their audiences, that’s also built to enable buy-side and sell-side 1P data collab… 📈 👀 😉
