For my fellow Exonians, our beloved Library is featured as a case study in tomorrow's webinar on engineering details of iconic modernist buildings - a really interesting new way to look at the Library!
What can we learn from studying iconic mid-century modern buildings? This Friday, March 8, SGH’s Matthew Bronski will host a webinar exploring intricate details of iconic academic buildings. This presentation will focus on six iconic buildings, reviewing a specific detail from each project to appreciate its aesthetic design and examine its technical success or failure.

Selected Works We are pleased to present a small series of selected master's theses and student projects that have been created with our support in recent years. The works not only demonstrate very convincingly the high standard of many works by architecture students at the UdK Berlin, but also provide a good example of the diversity and innovative power that can arise from the overlapping of creative and academic practice. At the same time, they are also an example of a departure and rethinking in architecture towards a performance-orientated and knowledge-based design of people's physical spaces and a sustainable architectural practice that is fit for the future. After the initial presentation of "Rethinking Affluent Buildings" we would like to proceed with the work of Jan Winkens: "Noise is Beautiful" Jans master’s thesis, combines his two personal fields of interest – architecture and noise music. In his search for unusual sounds in the noise of the metropolis, he focussed on the area around the Messe-Nord/ICC, supposedly the loudest place in Berlin. For Jan, this is a place that generates a great deal of tension between excessive demands and enthusiasm, melancholy and euphoria. Based on the research on site, the project attempts to give the noise of the city itself a spatial expression. To this end, the on-site recordings are alienated and placed in a new context. The experimental search for new forms of representation and notations of noises and sounds became an essential aspect of the work. #noise; #architecture; #field_conditions; #new_notations_of_noise; #sound_of_metropolis https://lnkd.in/d3RK9xmX https://lnkd.in/dxKh9cig

Connecting the old and the new when it comes to structures is something architects and contractors have to manage all the time; how to make the new fit with the original without it jarring or looking out of place. Sometimes the best approach is to match what's there, and at other times to take advantage of the contrast. This is well demonstrated in this case study. A new teaching block at Dene Magna School is connected to the original with Spaceshade covered walkways, which contrast well with the existing canopy. https://lnkd.in/e8n4D6GZ

Don't Miss Out On The Next Big Event!! Mark Your Calendar For May 15th In our next Big Event, "Adapting The Past to an LED Future", we will discuss all of the processes involved with the restoration of historic luminaires, including wiring, UL testing, and component fabrication, modernization methods and LED technologies. This event is based upon our previous AIA accredited course which was previously delivered to national organizations such as the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Annual Conference, Leducation, and LightFair. This course was also featured in an issue of LD+A, the premiere magazine of the IES. A key topic in "Adapting The Past to an LED Future" is the importance of UL listing procedures and products which will be covered in a second presentation, "UL Certification & Its Importance". During the event, both presentations will offer in-person examples and demos as it relates to the subject matter. Complimentarily refreshments, snacks, and lunch provided for all participants. All are welcome!!! . . . . #grandlight #lighting #modernization #commercialcleaning #retrofitting #retrofit #historicreplication #lightingreplication #finishrestoration #refinishing #replicationlighting #lightingtransportation #customlighting #lightingdesign #lightrestoration #restoration #lightingrestoration #historicrestoration #antiquerestoration #vintagelighting #vintagerestoration #lightingdesign #lightingdesigner #lightingrepair #lightingdesigners #historicarchitecture #architecture #historiclighting #design #historicpreservation

Nestled on 34 acres of stunning woodland, wetland, and meadow in rural New Jersey, The Willow School stands as a beacon for academic excellence intertwined with the marvels of nature. Hone+Associates led an interdisciplinary design team, uniting ecologists, historians, curriculum developers, landscape architects, engineers, and school stakeholders to craft a visionary design that harmonizes the campus with its historical, environmental, and social context. Our Master Plan proposes a vision where: 🌱The environment becomes a catalyst for unique educational experiences that are framed by the curriculum and the building. 🌟 Buildings celebrate the learning journey, embodying both the literal and metaphorical paths of exploration and growth. 🌾 New structures pay homage to the local agrarian heritage while embodying modernity and seamlessly bridging the past and the future. 🏞️ Architectural design derives from observations of natural systems, emphasizing edges as focal points of richness, interaction, tension, and growth. At Hone+Associates, we're committed to crafting spaces that become catalysts for educational excellence and foster #EnvironmentalStewardship. #SustainableDesign #EducationalExcellence #InnovativeArchitecture

Checkpoint Charlie Reverie: A Student’s Encounter with Modernist Legacy In Berlin’s heart, where histories collide, Stands the Checkpoint Charlie apartments, a modernist pride. By Koolhaas and Sauerbruch, its structure unfolds, A narrative of past and present, intricately told. Seven stories rise with twenty-one homes, An elevated skeleton where legacy roams. Once customs and allied forces held their sway, Now homes and memories in layers play. The entrance hall, vast, a Le Corbusier baton, Echoes grand, with whispers of times bygone. No lightbulbs shine, yet ACME’s glow I recall, A magical orb, illuminating a student’s thrall. Through halls of camouflage, the urban tapestry weaves, Spaces where function and form interleave. Balconies and porticos, a dance in the sky, An architectural dialogue that catches the eye. Walking through history, a film on rewind, My tutor Matthias, REM’s genius combined. Faces of fame, yet a lightbulb within, A spark of ambition, where dreams begin. Caught in the grandeur, the scale so immense, A cinematic moment, intense and dense. In the shadows of masters, a student’s quest, To surpass, to shine, to be the very best. Checkpoint Charlie, a monument to strive, A beacon of design where past lives thrive. In its corridors, I found my path, Guided by architects’ wisdom, a light in the aftermath. #CheckpointCharlie #OMA #RemKoolhaas #MatthiasSauerbruch #BerlinArchitecture #IBA1987 #ModernistLegacy #ArchitecturalExperience #StudentJourney #UrbanCamouflage #ArchitecturalIcons #DesignInspiration #HistoricMonuments

In this thrilling architectural showdown, we delve into the captivating world of Greek and Roman architecture. Through captivating visuals and insightful commentary, we'll guide you through the key elements to understand architecture as a language beyond styles, epochs and cultures. The two buildings express Two Archetypes: Archetype intended as an original model or pattern, a prototype but also as one of the inherited mental images postulated by Jung as the content of the collective unconscious. The exterior space: Trilithic archetype (Trilithic derive from Greek words tria=three and lithos = stone) the interior space: Cave archetype. When architecture enters the domain of the unconscious, give shape to archetypes that reproduce - through forms - the "deep structures" drawn from history and nature. Different linguistic principles descend from these two archetypes.
