Durability of EVTOL batteries is examined here in context of battery sizing to total energy requirement and the resulting stress on specific power limitations on cycling performance. In the on-highway heavy truck BEV space we encourage truck OEM’s to size batteries based on power required for start-ability and gradability at battery end-of-life. This sometimes results in an oversized battery relative to energy requirement if fitting an existing battery to a new truck chassis application. This is particularly true if using PASSCAR battery cells to construct heavy truck battery packs. In the EVTOL application, it’s challenging to accomodate the added mass of an over-sized battery, forcing the consideration and trade-off against a battery cell design with high specific power and good high-rate cycling durability. Hence the very difficult trade-off of battery weight versus battery durability for EVTOL. Will this drive the EVTOL industry to low durability batteries and very high levels of battery waste?

From a 19-passenger electric plane, moving on to a hybrid with a turbogenerator and four electric motors, to continue with another hybrid configuration, with two turboprops and two electric motors. The evolution of the revolution continues...

Study of LH2 fueled subsonic passenger transport aircraft The potential of using liquid hydrogen as fuel in subsonic transport aircraft was investigated to explore an expanded matrix of passenger aircraft sizes. Aircraft capable of carrying 130 passengers 2,780 km (1500 n.mi.); 200 passengers 5,560 km (3000 n.mi.); and 400 passengers on a 9,265 km (5000 n.mi.) radius mission, were designed parametrically. Both liquid hydrogen and conventionally fueled versions were generated for each payload/range in order that comparisons could be made. ⚙ [Technical progresses] 🛠 As you may have seen recently our Muret building is taking more and more importance as the place where we receive, test and validate the parts of our Atea full-scale prototype. Last December, the 8 electrical engines of our Atea prototype were delivered at Muret where there are being tested and two weeks ago we received an important part of the propulsion system: the turbogenerator (TG). We chose to work with Turbotech Aero to provide Ascendance with this turbogenerator for its Atea prototype. This TG aims to produce electric power from fuel (SAF) to support or recharge the aircraft batteries depending on the different phases of the flight. As you can see in this test video (on the right with the turbine exhaust pipe), we started validating the integration and the performance of the TG within our hybrid-electric propulsion system, using our real-scale test bench GAIA, that is representative of the aircraft hybrid chain. It’s looking more and more concrete everyday (👏 to the Muret team) and we'll keep showing you our progresses in the upcoming months.
