What happens when preparation meets opportunity? Baseball was my sport growing up. I loved the game. In baseball, every player dreams of the perfect pitch in the perfect moment… 2 outs, bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, and you get the perfect pitch to win the game. But what if it has nothing to do with that moment? What if it has everything to do with your parents giving you a baseball bat when you were 5? What if it’s about taking batting practice before and after school because your high school coach kept you on the bench? What if it’s about not getting a scholarship and having to walk on to a small college? Or fighting for years in the minor leagues because the “experts” didn’t believe your stats were good enough? The journey is far more important to your results than a single moment. When preparation meets opportunity, that’s where the magic happens. Don’t downplay your origin story. Stoney Creek Baseball achieved a remarkable milestone this season by posting a 1.359 league ERA. This set a new school and program record. As Pitching Coach, I emphasized a few key fundamentals that our staff consistently incorporated during every outing: 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝: We focused on throwing first-pitch strikes and getting ahead in the count. Pitcher success grows exponentially when it comes to getting ahead (and staying ahead) in the count. 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬: Each pitcher identified and optimized their strengths, whether it was a specific pitch type or movement profile, and utilized it constantly to maximize their effectiveness. For example, pitchers with a plus-movement profile on fastballs used it more heavily over other pitches. Your best pitch should be used frequently. 𝐁𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Using a diverse pitch mix kept hitters guessing, minimizing their ability to anticipate and adjust, leading to more strikeouts and weak contact. As a staff, we avoided "predictable pitching" and standard pitching sequences at the high school level (such as the 0-2 waste pitch) to keep batters on their toes. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐥𝐲: Our guys stayed on their toes throughout the season, always ready to make necessary adjustments to continue their success. While major changes are difficult during the season, the players consistently sought to hone their craft and refine their pitch mix to gain an advantage. I give them a ton of credit for actively learning and adjusting. The foundation we’ve built this season sets a high standard for Stoney Creek arms. I am incredibly proud of our pitchers and their dedication to constantly improving and executing our game plan. Stoney Creek Baseball has a bright future ahead.
