How do you get innovations and new evidence implemented in a busy healthcare system? Because, "you can spend billions of dollars of #research, but it doesn’t matter a sausage if it doesn’t get through to patients”, as Ed Piper of AstraZeneca pointed out in the The Academy of Medical Sciences FORUM Sir Colin Dollery Lecture panel discussion last week. In some ways, the history of abyssmal implementation (e.g. decades to adopting complex innovations such as handwashing and eating oranges to treat scurvy etc) is a comfort - this not a new problem but " it gives us the motivation to think differently". The keynote, Professor Jo Rycroft-Malone OBE, talked about how the relatively new field of #implementationscience could potentially help. She pointed out, and panellists later agreed, that: 🧠 Knowledge alone is not enough, 💡 Context is a hugely important factor for #implementation (though there is a tension between tweaking implementation for context and the need to be able to implement effectively at scale, across different contexts). 🤝 #coproduction of #innovations and evidence with end-users (including patients) from the start is essential, particularly given that the public can be great advocates for effective healthcare innovation. It was also interesting to think about the importance of de-implementation of old processes/tech alongside implementation of the new, to: 🚪 Ensure equal access to well-evidenced care. 😵 Avoid layering processes on top of each other, decreasing instead of increasing efficiencies. Jarrard research and marketing firm gathered survey data from over 1000 healthcare consumers this Spring, and compiled a compelling report (DM for a PDF copy). These key takeaways look like GREAT NEWS for those progressive, clinically oriented pharmacists who want to: 1. Adopt newer tech to meet younger patients where they are 2. Offer lower acuity, quick and convenient services 3. Do it all with a 'bedside manor' that only community pharmacists can pull off. The best: Patients equate quality, not with awards or certifications, but with their actual experience with clinicians. Simply stopping and LISTENING to them seems to the real outlying behavior that can set practices apart as EXCELLENT.

The insight board discussion, held in September 2023, highlighted the value of e-labelling and its impact on pharmacy. Advantages included improving environmental sustainability and patient health literacy through access to relevant information. The insight board experts also highlighted barriers to e-labelling in their respective regions and countries, such as digital literacy gaps, security concerns and implementation complexity. Pharmacists are expected to take bigger roles in patient education and guidance on e-labels, as well as in empowerment and collaboration with other stakeholders, the report says.

I’m excited to announce that I have joined Private Health Management (PHM; https://lnkd.in/gRMd48i6) as Head of Strategy. Even as a professional in the healthcare industry, it can be incredibly hard to navigate the system when someone you love is diagnosed with cancer or another serious and complex and condition.
