There seems to be a shift happening at traditional law firms, with 63% of leaders at large firms noticing a decline in the number of associates aspiring to make partner.  A LexisNexis survey of over 500 associates and senior leaders found that concerns around the work-life balance of partnership were the biggest driver of this change. At Setfords we know that, in order to do their best work, lawyers need to be happy in their roles and work-life balance is a pivotal part of this. How to poach-proof your law firm? Keep your attorneys happy. But how do you do that if different generations want different things? Brian Levinson, founder and managing partner of NALSC: the National Association of Legal Search Consultants member firm Alevistar Legal Search says the lead draw for talent to join midsized firms is not money, it’s culture. Large firms might win the compensation war, but mid-sized firms can compete – and win – in other important areas such as hybrid policies, work-life balance, and career development opportunities and partnership prospects. But there are concerns about generational divides in working habits and expectations. “Less and less, people are concerned with upward mobility as they were in years past … we live in a now moment, and they’re worried about the now,” Levinson said. It’s a scenario that has played out at companies for decades: Two colleagues meet. A romance blossoms. Complications arise. The romantic relationship between Norfolk Southern Chief Executive Alan Shaw and the railroad’s chief legal officer is the latest in a long line of incidents that have tested corporate policies and caused headaches for companies internally. Employment lawyers like to say that love and lust in the office isn’t illegal—it is just usually not a good idea. Most employers restrict managers or senior executives from dating their subordinates, wanting to avoid power imbalances, but they are typically far more open to lower-level employees entering into relationships. The reason? Many people meet partners in the office. A survey earlier this year by SHRM found that roughly 20% of workers have gone on a date with a co-worker in the past year.
