Orion is a key-value/document database with certain blockchain properties, but it DOES NOT have the following two blockchain properties: Smart Contracts: While most blockchains supports smart contracts for automating tasks, HSBC Orion, with its focus on regulatory compliance, might not utilize smart contracts for gold tokenization. Decentralization: Most blockchains operates on a public, yet decentralized network with independent nodes run by a distributed participants. HSBC Orion, however, is likely a permissioned, centralized platform controlled by the bank. Orion, a #centralized ledger, inherits the following blockchain properties: Immutability (Tamper Evidence): Transactions representing gold ownership are recorded on the blockchain and cannot be altered undetected. Any user can request proof of a transaction's existence at any time, ensuring data integrity. This data contains encoded information about which function is being invoked and any arguments needed by that function. It's crucial in facilitating interactions with smart contracts. e.g In Ethereum's Uniswap v3, call data would be used when interacting with smart contracts that manage liquidity, execute swaps, and other functions. For instance, the call data could encode details like the token pair involved in a swap or the desired price range for liquidity provision. 🔹Impact of call data Direct Interaction: Call data enables direct interaction with smart contracts, allowing decentralized applications to execute complex business logic. Decentralized Operations: Users can interact with decentralized protocols like Uniswap or other DeFi apps without intermediaries by encoding data directly in the blockchain transaction. Cost and Efficiency: Since call data forms a part of the transaction, its size directly affects the gas cost for the transaction. Larger call data means higher gas costs. 🔹 Threats if call data is not managed properly: Gas Costs: More extensive call data means increased gas fees. It combines the Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) algorithm, a well-known contribution from distributed systems literature, with the Flexible Round-Optimized Schnorr Threshold (FROST) signature scheme, a recent finding in cryptographic research. Leveraging state-of-the-art privacy-enhancing techniques, FBFT builds a collective agreement certificate (or “joint cryptographic signature”), which represents the endorsement of a given set of transactions by a quorum of validators. In addition, it provides strong guarantees of tolerance to Byzantine faults – situations where some validators may stop functioning or behave dishonestly, possibly due to software bugs or cyber-attacks. Finally, it preserves the confidentiality of validators: Their number and identities is only known to the central authority and its delegates, and not leaked to DLT participants. The advantage is a reduction in the risk of attacks targeted at specific validators We integrate our FBFT protocol into the code of a Bitcoin-like blockchain, effectively adapting its consensus component to a permissioned context, and we evaluate its performance across a variety of geographically distributed, realistic scenarios. To demonstrate its practicality and encourage further  research, we provide an open-source implementation of our DLT. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a Central Bank releases in open source a distributed consensus algorithm developed entirely in-house. The resulting system, although experimental and lacking features expected of productionready solutions, can be seen as an alternative platform for a distributed, resilient transactional system: Operated by a set of trusted actors, distributed at geographic scale, it holds potential for mission-critical applications, such as wholesale and retail Central Bank Digital Currencies, and – in perspective – asset tokenization schemes.
