The Knesset plenum voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday in favor of a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state. The resolution, put forward by MK Ze’ev Elkin of the New Hope-National Right party with support from the Yisrael Beiteinu Party and the Land of Israel Caucus, passed by 68 to 9. UK is waking up. But I will not be bullied or silenced. … At its heart is the perverse and, I would argue corrupt relationship between the Conservative friends of Israel and the top of the Conservative Party. Former UK foreign minister slams conservatives for promoting Israeli over UK's national interest Very harsh criticism, very similar to the situation in US public office and general political dynamics which have been articulated by several high profile US politicians such as former presidents Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter. (A promised Land, 2020; Peace or Apartheid, 2006) To be critical of Israel means that one is attacked as being anti-Israel, and often as being antisemitic by well-funded, Israeli tied lobbyist, Jewish organizations, and high-profile media personalities. With as a result, many argue, like Walt and Maersheimer (The Israel lobby, 2006) policy tends to impede US national interests. What's important is that these organizations work closely with the Israeli government, are predominantly funded/ supported by millionaire and billionaire (far-)right conservatives, Christian Evangelicals and the Jewish community. Mostly, they do not reflect the average or general opinion of the US Jewish community, although they often portray themselves as their political manifestation. The consequences of the incredible amount of funding and power in congress, and the absence of a significant counter movement, is that at the moment US presidents urge for continuation of the Israel/Palestinian peace process, rebuke Israeli settlement activity or IDF war crimes, they lack instruments to enforce US interests without losing extraordinary amounts of political capital or being halted altogether. This happened to republicans, such as Bush 43 and democratis alike. Something of which Obama says ‘does not happen in dealing with other allies.’ Congresspersons are under the thumb of pro-israel lobbyists, of which the foremost is AIPAC, to spend millions on rival pro-Israel candidates to unseat the dissident in the next election. Even Jewish congresspersons are reluctant to speak out when they in terms of substance feel they should, in fear of retaliation. Moreover, legislation has been approved to continuously, without renewed approval, grant military and financial aid regardless of international or US law, (like the Leahy law) and regardless of presidential policy or general US interests. Id est, Pro-Israelism has been institutionalized. Apparently similar dynamics are at work in the UK. The former minister has been criticial, and miraculously allegations of antisemitism found their way into the public eye. The message to anyone critical of Israel is clear. Of course, he is vindicated of charges. And luckily Duncan is brave enough to keep speaking his conviction.
