Do you roll your eyes when you get another engagement survey at work? Do your employees? We send surveys and analyze data. We ask the wrong questions and find the wrong answers. We then proceed to be surprised when our "data-driven" interventions don't move the needle. Ever seen companies in crisis decide to throw all of their HR weight behind introducing new career architectures? This happens so often that I've lost count. Ever see a CEO get up on stage and talk about how getting career architectures right turned their business around? I haven't, either. Statistical analysis of the recent engagement survey shows that a lack of role clarity and career advancement is driving all the bad things. We've got the P values and the confidence intervals to prove it. And it's still 100% wrong. The Streetlight Effect is no joke. When we look in the wrong places, we're guaranteed to find the wrong things. Meanwhile, only 33% (Gallup) of the workforce is engaged. It's a ~2 Trillion (with a T) issue. Forget dollars, two thirds of the workforce are spending the majority of their waking hours doing things that don't engage them. This is a very real human tragedy. It doesn't have to be this way.
