On Tuesday 12 December, the draft Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill passed the second reading stage in the House of Commons. The vote was not the start of the story in relation to the Government’s policy: since the Rwanda policy was announced in April 2022, it has been the subject of much legal challenge. What is perhaps less known is that various charities also brought legal challenges. Mukuru Kwa Reuben community has over 18 schools but only two almost-equipped libraries. This has directly impacted the quality of education available to students in this community, hindering their #academic growth and overall development. The #students in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, like many in Nairobi’s vulnerable communities, face the bitter reality of limited #educational resources. Recently, the community faced significant flooding that devastated the area and completely submerged the library, causing extensive damage to books, equipment, and the facility itself. This disaster is reminiscent of a similar event in 1997, highlighting the recurrent nature of such tragedies. The #library, which had been serving 50 to 100 students daily and included facilities such as a #sanitary corner for girls, is now unusable. Given the recurring threat of flooding, Badili Zone Organization has decided to move the library to a new location and rebuild it with adequate measures to withstand future #environmental challenges. The plan includes constructing a three-floor facility with a reading area, book storage, computer training space, and a rooftop for group activities and meetings. This new facility aims to be more than just a library; it will serve as a community hub and a haven during crises. The community calls for support to #fundraise for the new library's construction. Check out this new report about British Muslim Giving Behaviours from Consultancy Blue State. Their research found British Muslims are the most generous group in the UK, giving more than four times as much money to charity each year than the British average: ·      British Muslims gave £708 each on average over 12 months, compared to £165 for the wider UK population - over four times more ·      Almost half (49%) are planning to give more to charity in the next year ·      3 in 4 have already donated to support individuals impacted by the war in Gaza ·      1 in 2 are open to giving their Zakat to charitable organisations ·      Ease and transparency are crucial motivators when it comes to giving   ·      Muslims in the UK are also twice as likely as the British average to raise money via community events and via personal challenges such as running marathons https://lnkd.in/e7fptn3s
