Axios' Sam Sabin reports that even small U.S. defense contractors are valuable targets for cybersecurity intrusions and ransomware attacks by adverse nation-states. 70% of defense companies in the U.S. are categorized as small businesses, many of which haven't invested in the type of cybersecurity countermeasures necessary to protect themselves from hacks, "despite very public warnings over the last year from top U.S. cyber officials." In June 2025, InCyber Forum San Antonio will bring together many of these stakeholders from around the country, including small businesses, government cybersecurity experts, and others, to discuss this gap in the marketplace. Participants will discuss solutions on how best to move forward to ensure the safest operating environment for U.S. defense contractors looking to protect themselves and their IP from outside threats by malign actors. “The federal government's proposed $6 million grant to establish an ISAC for the health sector is a positive first step, however would need to be funded an additional 10 times to establish sovereign ISACs for all 11 Australian Critical Infrastructure sectors,” – David Sandell, co-founder and CEO of CI-ISAC Australia. You may have seen the graphic below in my first policy brief on OT Cybersecurity for the Atlantic Council. Ric Derbyshire and team have expanded on this premise and IT vs OT TTPs in this article that reestablishes the foundations of OT cyber incidents with some REALLY interesting graphics that capture the evolving dynamics of IT/OT security (without FUD!). "It becomes clear that a significantly larger number of cyber-attacks that cause OT impact are category 1 and use only IT TTPs at 83% of the total ... By comparison, attacks that included the use of OT TTPs were poorly represented at 17% of the total." They do not have a crystal ball for OT-targeted attacks in the future by criminals. The quiet part out loud is that the level of sophistication required for OT-targeted attacks is still a hand that sophisticated countries or state-sponsored groups can and will continue to develop.
