So, I recently watched an old Tamil movie where the female lead and her interviewer discussed how the job market declined after companies resolved the Y2K problem, leaving her unable to find a job. This was the first time I heard about the Y2K problem and learned about it. What is the Y2K problem? Before 2000, older software was written by engineers using the MM/DD/YY format for dates, which worked fine until 1999 when a date like 09/10/99 would be understood as 09/10/1999. The problem arose when the year 2000 hit, as the date would reset to 00, making it impossible to differentiate between records from 09/10/1999 and 09/10/2099, both stored as 09/10/99. This issue led to a massive hiring surge in IT, which is when people often said, "IT is booming." Once the Y2K problem was solved, the boom subsided—at least, according to the movie. Now, why am I bringing this up? Because there's a new problem in town called the Y2K38 problem. What is the Y2K38 problem? Another way of storing time is through Unix timestamps, where time started at 0 seconds on January 1, 1970, 12:00:00 UTC, and seconds have been counting up ever since. As of writing this post, the timestamp is 1725938637352, meaning we are 1,725,938,637,352 seconds past January 1, 1970. This number format was stored in 32-bit systems, and many systems built during that era haven't been upgraded yet. On January 19, 2038, at 03:48:07 UTC, the storage will overflow and flip to a negative number, representing a date in 1901, causing system errors. While the Y2K38 issue isn't as problematic as the Y2K issue yet, it still requires significant effort to ensure today's systems and software don't become obsolete by January 19, 2038, 03:48:07 UTC. So, if you haven't checked your software for Y2K38 vulnerabilities, now is the time. Thirteen years, four months, and seven days can pass in the blink of an eye. #Y2K38 #EngineeringInitiative #Y2K #OldTamilMovie #TechHistory #DigitalTransformation #Unix #FutureProofing #SoftwareEngineering #LegacySystems #TechnologyTrends

Full transparency... I'm currently in the process of trying to change careers. I initially started out in civil service with the city of NY, working for the NYPD and 7 years later working for New York City Transit System. While both careers are considered "stable" given their civil service status, I didn't gravitate toward the idea of working either job for the next 20-25 years, which led me into entrepreneurship. During the pandemic I left the Transit Authority and started my own Transportation company, which was both scary and exciting at the same time! I knew completely nothing about hauling goods or freight, and it took me about 3 years or so to get comfortable enough with the business to where I felt it was capable of somewhat running itself. Fast forward to last year and I lost the sense of fulfillment with that, so I sold off assets and downsized to operating one truck. Having relocated to Charlotte, NC while all this was going on I had another thought come to mind.. I've always been intrigued by computers, and learning why things work the way they do, so I gave some thought to going back to school to pursue a career in cyber security.. I enrolled with My Computer Career last August and completed the program this past March with flying colors, eager to begin my tech career and begin a new chapter.. I created a LinkedIn profile at the urging of my career services counselor, and to be honest I. am. frightened... All I see are posts stating how awful the job market is, ( I can attest to this myself, I've lost count of the amount of applications I've filled out ) mass layoffs from one company to the next... It all makes me wonder if I've made the right choice?... While my careers with civil service were stable I didn't find them rewarding enough to stay... I hope I'm making the right choice..

20 years ago, software development, testing, and mainframes were the dream jobs for everyone. However, very few started their careers playing with wires, memory, and hard disks. This clearly showed the eagerness and passion for the domain of cybersecurity. Tapping into network packets to see what is hidden inside sparked curiosity, while trying to sniff and break communication was an interesting play during school days. For me, this hobby turned into a passion, and that passion turned into innovation, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in cybersecurity. Defend against unknowns in the way you think in the digital space #CybersecurityPassion #CareerJourney #Innovation
