Our latest ‘Demonstrating Success’ publication focuses on #ForestToBog Restoration. Plantation forestry covers approximately 18% (439,410 ha) of the UK’s peatlands and has had significant adverse impacts on biodiversity and functionality of #peatland habitats including the loss or displacement of specially adapted plant and animal communities. However, the practice of forest to bog restoration has advanced significantly, thanks to the collaborative nature of the restoration community. Through knowledge sharing between partnerships and sectors, it is possible to successfully rehabilitate these damaged areas of peatland and recover their beneficial climate and biodiversity functions. The publication showcases case studies from across the UK, looking at the challenges and opportunities presented by each project as well as celebrating their key successes and future ambitions. Here is a snapshot of some of the case studies: 1. The Border Mires are a collection of #peat bogs in the north of England, covering over 2,000 hectares. Historically, some areas were covered by tree plantations or affected by drainage for adjacent planting. As their case study shows, Forestry England are seeking to restore these degraded areas and ground smoothing has been trialled on a small mire restoration site in Kielder Forest with promising results. 2. Moss of Cree is an area of lowland raised bog in Dumfries and Galloway which had been afforested. Their case study shows how Peatland ACTION and landowner Ian McCreath have worked together to restore the area but demonstrates the challenges of monitoring and maintaining restoration progress. 3. Cors-y-Sarnau Nature Reserve has a variety of wetland habitats on deep peat deposits. The peatland extends into an adjacent conifer plantation where remnant mire communities are still present. A lack of baseline data, and the legacy of forestry operations leaving a landscape which was both uneven and dotted with tree stumps created unique challenges. As their case study shows, NORTH WALES WILDLIFE TRUST used digital surface modelling to identify hydrological and topographical barriers, aiding successful restoration design. At Biewer, we recognize and value the important part that forests play in our business and beyond. March 21st was declared #InternationalDayofForests by the United Nations in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of #forests. We take pride in practicing sustainable forestry and employ a team of in-house #foresters who manage responsible timber procurement. Forest #FunFacts from Think Wood 🌲 Active forest management mitigates wildfires, cuts carbon emissions, replenishes area waterways, expands wildlife habitat, and creates jobs in rural areas. 🌲 Forest management in the U.S. and Canada operates under federal, state, provincial, and local regulations to protect water quality, wildlife habitat, soil, and other natural resources. 🌲 In the U.S., more forest land is lost to development than forestry. #BiewerLumber #ForestDay #forestry #lumber #ThinkWood #sustainability #wood #lumberindustry #manufacturing
