The Dutch government's objective is to reduce the annual flight count at this state-owned airport by about 10%, aiming for a total of 452,500 flights, in an effort to address the issue of... noise pollution. JetBlue is expanding in the Caribbean, despite repeatedly calling out competitive pressures the region (including Latin America) on its first-quarter call in April. The airline on Wednesday unveiled three new destinations (Bonaire, St. Croix, and St. Vincent) and eight new routes with start dates in October and December: • San Juan - Cancun, Medellin, Providence, St. Croix, Santiago (DR), and White Plains • New York JFK - Bonaire and St. Vincent The expansion comes after JetBlue President Marty St. George said in April: "We continue to be challenged by elevated capacity in our Latin region, which makes up roughly 35% of our total capacity ... To put this pressure into context, if you exclude our Latin flying, our system-level unit revenue growth would be positive for the first quarter versus actual unit revenue growth which was down 2.5%." But no one should be surprised with the expansion. On the same April call, JetBlue Head of Finance and Strategy David Clark said: "Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic [are] both extremely important markets to us. Spirit problems are not only network but also strategy… ULCC’s have a really hard time gaining market share due to US market high GDP per capita. There’s a need to bump up services, especially on cabin. Development of an upgraded economy product would dramatically increase yielding, along with a more focused distribution network (more Alaska Airlines network, less Southwest). United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby this morning, asked about his former airline American Airlines and its controversial distribution strategy: "There's starting to be a divergence in how each of the network carriers are behaving. And I think, by the way, in a way that makes an awful lot of sense for each of them, depending on what our networks are. So... American's, small city focus, they have great hubs in Dallas and Charlotte. That's where they make the majority of their money in Dallas and Charlotte. Those are markets that need -- I mean, I help build those hubs. They need a lot of regional jet service. And the distribution model is different for those hubs than it is if your hubs are in New York and San Francisco... instead of just copycatting each other on everything, we're each pursuing strategies that are best aligned to where our network is." #airline #unitedairlines #americanairlines

JetBlue is trying to acquire Spirit AeroSystems. My strategic warning lights are flashing. The debate seems to center on whether or not it is anti-competitive. That's less important than asking if they can make it work. I don't think they can. First, in general M&A transactions have high odds of success. Our research says only 1/3 achieve the results promised. Others give the odds at 50/50. At best M&A is an expensive coin toss. Second, Jet Blue does not have the infrastructure and other competencies to deliver value-creation post transaction. In my book, Value-Creating Growth, I used the example of USAir's decision to move from a Southwest Airlines style regional player to a national and even international airline. As I predicted they failed and were acquired by American Airlines at a bargain price. As a Jet Blue traveller I've been impacted by the decline in customer service as they've broadened their destinations including, gasp, to Europe. If they can't handle the building out of the original business model how will they perform by acquiring a new model as a no frills, low cost airline? My guess is not well at all. While it is natural for management to overreach it is also the responsibility of the board of directors to engage in the strategy dialogue, to encourage the pursuit of opportunity but also to put a break on bad ideas. Let's hope they are not as inept as was the OpenAI board or Theranos or ... #strategy #mergers #governance
