How many rivers of Palestinian blood need to flow before you feel cleansed of your guilt over the Holocaust? Anti-zionism is not anti-semitism. As a Jewish state requires the cleansing of the local, ancestral, non-jewish arabs majorities, it's impossible for it to be a democracy. And it inherently enables ethnic #cleansing and #genocide. And the best thing about genocide is: it is a very well defined crime. It's not a matter of feelings or opinion, there are well-defined criteria for it written in the #GenevaConvention on the prevention of genocide [1]. The South Africa report to the #ICJ clearly showed they all have been fulfilled in #Israel's appalling conduct of war. The worst crime of all possible crimes on Earth. After WW II, there was so much Western guilt about the Holocaust that, even though Jews owned less than 10% of the land of historic Palestine, Israel was given 56% of the land and 80% of the coast. And, Israel was given the most arable lands. The racism of that is obvious. What is less obvious to many in the West today (but clear to just about everyone else, especially in the Global South) is that the 2-State solution is fundamentally racist to the core because it acknowledges that white people can take land from brown people and do whatever they want with it (including partitioning it so that white people now have 78% of the land). Let me be clear, white people do not have the right to create Israel and then demand everyone else recognize its right to exist. Very grateful to theJewish Council of Australia for organising the webinar today with Peter Beinart . It was a rich and nuanced perspective which I understand will be elaborated in his forthcoming book. For me key points were: - the value of supporting the diversity of Jewish perspectives on the nature of the Israel/Palestine state as part of the task of tackling anti- semitism - the central importance of consistent support for non discriminatory democratic practice - avoiding the trap of Israeli exceptionalism - for the future of democracy everywhere and the protection of the systems which underpin the safety of Jews (and everyone else) in diaspora communities as well as in Israel - the importance of bringing Jews Muslims and Christians together to counter the dehumanisation that erodes natural human empathy and promotes the horrific (genocidal) acts which are currently being perpetrated - the value of continuing to encourage measured and enlightened discussion of how Palestinians (including those with Right of Return) and Jews can live as equals in the land both communities call home.

It started in 1936 with the evictions of Palestinians, and the crushing, by Zionists and the British, of the Palestinian General Strike, Then the Deir Yassin and 19 other village massacres in 1948 by the Stern Gang, and the Irgun Gang, originally commanded by Zionist Jabotinsky, And the ethnic cleansing of 3/4m Palestinians, And another 340,000 Palestinian refugees in 1967, And the brutal Occupation and violent settlers. The 1982 massacres of Sabra and Shatila, The blockade and bombardments of Gaza from 2007, And 17 failed peace talks. Three quarters of a century of brutality generated Oct 7th. It was a crime against humanity, But like Haiti, generated by oppression For which the oppressors – Israel, the US, the UK – bear responsibility. Zionism is an ideology. Without weapons it would be weak. So back to colonialism, and America. In 1986 Biden, the very same, said had Israel not existed America would have invented it. America’s power was built on slavery, Then transformed to fossil capitalism – Literally fuelled by coal, then oil. Oil is the driver of American power. Israel – an army with a country – its agent to control the region against Russia and China, The Israeli lobby is its political voice, It runs with the flow, it cuts with the grain. Hence its power. As Mandela said, “Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians”, A deep truth for Jews, For a people who oppress another can never themselves be free. It’s not antisemitic to boycott Israel, It is our duty, We are two peoples with one future, From all of the river to all of the sea We shall all be free.

Professor Avi Shlaim a former Zionist “As a Jew I have the moral duty to stand up for the Palestinians. All Jews also have a moral duty to stand up by the Palestinians now.” I would like to make three observations: And that is.  1.     That Israel has obstructed every international effort at peace since 1967.  Israel has been diplomatically intransigent, and the Israeli occupation is the most prolonged and brutal occupation of modern times. 2.     The second observation is about the Palestinians. They've been demonised. But when you look at the reality, Palestinian intransigence is a myth. First the PLO moderated its programme and signed the Oslo accord with Israel. Hamas was also an extremist movement with an extremist charter, but it won a fair and free election on June 19, 2006, and it was not allowed to govern by Israel and by Israel's western allies. So Hamas moderated its programme. Hamas offered Israel negotiations on a long-term truce. Hamas also accepted the Palestinian state along the pre 1967 borders. All these gestures were completely ignored by Israel, and Israel continued to use brute force to solve what is essentially a political problem. There is no military solution to this conflict. There can only be a political solution, but Israel frustrates it. 3.     And my third observation is that the international community has singularly failed the Palestinian people. And the this is one of the most glaring cases of injustice in modern history, and the international community has been unable to do anything for the Palestinians. And more specifically, I blame America for the use of the veto to incapacitate and not enable the international community to protect the Palestinian people.  But now I take some hope from the fact that both the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice are looking at what Israel is doing and in due course they'll come up with their conclusions. I'm sure they would uphold the charges that Israel is committing genocide and then this would go to the Security Council and one can only hope that. America wouldn't use the veto again to defeat, to prevent once again the international community from doing its duty to the Palestinians. 4.     And, if I may, offer one last reflection. Zionism, the establishment of the State of Israel, involved a monumental injustice to the Palestinians an injustice that is only being exacerbated over time and reaches its climax in Gaza today.
