Happy to share that our latest review paper, "Teacher Leadership: A Review of Literature on the Conceptualization and Outcomes of Teacher Leadership," has been published! Co-authored with Fjolla Kacaniku and Blerim Saqipi this review examines how teacher leadership is understood and its impact on educational outcomes. Really enjoyed speaking to middle leaders from Wycombe High School today on fostering meaningful conversations between subject and senior leaders to support curriculum development. Drew on work from Christine Counsell, Geraint Brown and Ruth Ashbee to explore: 👉🏻 why understanding subject distinctiveness matters; 👉🏻 the function of substantive and disciplinary knowledge in different subjects; 👉🏻 the importance of sequencing. We looked at: ❔practical examples of questions to support positive interrogation of subjects by senior leaders in routine line management; 🔬ways in which subject leaders can avoid senior leaders from viewing their subjects and teaching through poor common proxies. Key takeaways: 👥 engagement with a subject community, where possible, is key to teacher development; 🤝 senior leaders need to respect the expertise of subject leaders, and subject leaders need to find a way to communicate the essence of their subject to SLT; 🏫 leading curriculum is the responsibility of the entire SLT. Stay sharp! When you're a leader swinging big and making bold changes, sometimes you must lead from the front and show people the expectations. Sometimes, that means you end up teaching a foundational reading lesson to a group of secondary principals to model what we want to see in the foundational reading classes we've launched to support our secondary students- over 85% reading significantly below grade level. I set up a model classroom with resources, the exact chair setup I wanted to see in classrooms at their school, how to set up the materials, and the exact energy and precision all of our teachers need to be teaching with. We had a blast together, and I got to walk the walk with our leaders. I can't wait to do follow-up observations next week with Christy Sadri to see how our leaders put what they learned into action regarding coaching and developing their teachers. As a leader, you have to stay sharp and be willing to show that you know the vision you're shooting for, you know how to break it down into clear criteria for success and steps to implement it, and that you're willing to be vulnerable and put yourself out there in the process.
