Advancing in Biblical Hebrew: An Interview with Dr. Benjamin Noonan, associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Columbia International University (Part 1 of 2). We talk about his education, his books, and his expertise in Biblical Hebrew research (including non-Semitic loanwords, discourse analysis, and the value of linguistics)!

In order to address the question of why middle school students are lacking in their Hebrew reading and comprehension skills, Rabbi Shmuel Feld encourages a reworking of the current system by which Hebrew language is taught at Jewish day schools (link in comments). His observational concerns are validated by our research findings. Results from MaDYK (Mivchan Dinami shel Y’cholot Kriah), the only dynamic early Hebrew reading assessment designed specifically for second language learners, show that a significant portion of students in Jewish day schools are not meeting benchmark levels for reading fluency by the end of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. To tackle this issue, a research-based approach is warranted. Implementing the science of reading at an early age, which emphasizes phonological awareness and other core literacy skills, will better equip children with the strong foundation needed to decode words and comprehend texts. Simultaneously, it is critical to address the unique linguistic properties of the Hebrew language and not just apply English reading principles. Indeed, combining the universal science of reading and Hebrew-specific concepts while concentrating on texts that are part and parcel of Jewish tradition (e.g., siddur and Chumash) can empower students to become proficient readers and active participants in Jewish learning and communal life. In 2023-24, 19 schools piloted our Even Kriah curriculum based on these foundational ideas with much success. More are adopting in 2024-25 and we’ll post periodic updates to share their journey of Hebrew reading along the way.

My first academic paper is out now, co-authored with my wonderful colleagues and mentors Eli Benedict, Sonya Yampolskaya and Lily Kahn. It has been a real pleasure working together with such a talented and supporting team. The paper is about the day to day use of pre-modern Hebrew in diaspora Yiddish-speaking charedi communities. It describes in detail the uses of Hebrew alongside Yiddish (diglossia) and its social stratification by gender, age and class. One particularly interesting factoid about this use of Hebrew is that it's almost exclusively used in writing and reading, but not in speech, and its use signifies a higher and more prestigious formal or scholarly register than the use of Yiddish does - not too dissimilar to the function of Latin in European educated circles up to modern times.
