Formal education helped me Go Wide YouTube helped me go deeper Example: I studied Philosophy in my bachelors During my undergraduate years, I got to know that philosophy has been divided into two categories 1) Eastern Philosophy 2) western philosophy Each has different school of thoughts If we take Western philosophy, I gotta know that there are many school of thoughts like Rationalism, Idealism, Empricism, Existentialism, Nihilism, epistemology. If we take the idea of Existentialism, I gotta know that there are individuals like Albert Camus , Jean-Paul Sartre , Soren Kierkegaard , Fredrich Nietzsche, Each had their own approach. I now have the mind map,Whenever I come across any sort of documentary on Albert Camus or Satre ; I tend to refer to that map and have the idea of where their work lies and what I can get if I watch that YouTube documentary. There is a difference between philosophy student watching documentary on Albert Camus and the one who never studied Philosophy or didn’t know what Existentialism refers to. Philosophy student is more likely to be better at connecting dots than the other one. YouTube is Free , you can learn anything. But Traditional learning gives you a structure and a route map Never, ever Underestimate the power of Traditional Learning! It is invaluable, Academic scholars spend decades, Researching and developing better ways to provide you everything you need to know. When teaching at university, one of the most challenging things to teach is how to evaluate a question as having merit. More-so, when to dismiss an opinion as irrelevant based on its grounding. Yes, we want to philosophical inquiry to be open and creative, but sometimes an opinion is far too uneducated to be considered. To simplify, not all opinions or questions are equal. Simply holding an opinion doesn't make it informed or "good". This essay presents a pressing problem as education continues to be polluted by theocratic and authoritarian ideology. We need students who are challenged by reason and not ideology. I leverage the Philosophy for Children approach. The Good Thinkers Toolkit is a solid foundation to getting my students to leverage a framework for philosophical investigation.
