My latest blog covers apprehension over back-to-school antisemitism - for both students and faculty -- as well as ISGAP - Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy and my plans for Hadassah -- and how they all come together.

My latest publication in the European Educational Research Journal with Eli Smeplass: "Becoming Morally Equipped: A Study of Children’s Public Expressions." Our research analyses the letters and drawings submitted by children to Aftenposten Junior, highlighting their moral sensibility and engagement with societal issues. Our findings illustrate how young voices shape cultural and civic narratives, suggesting that children's moral development can be better understood in situational and cultural contexts, rather than purely psychological ones. Proud Ethnic Studies teacher here. 🙋🏼♀️ My big takeaways from this flawed piece in today’s East Bay Times: 1) Why weren’t Palestinian advocacy groups interviewed or invited into this conversation about how their history, perspectives, and contributions have now been totally wiped from the state’s model Ethnic Studies curriculum? 2) Why weren’t Ethnic Studies educators interviewed for this piece to authentically share about their curricular design, instructional practice, and intentional centering of student voice? (I had Jewish and Palestinian students in my Ethnic Studies classes this year and would have loved the opportunity to discuss how we critically explored issues and fostered a safe, affirming learning community for all. And I am not alone in this work!) 3) The ethos of Ethnic Studies is rooted in justice, radical love, and activism. The discipline was crafted (and fought for) by groups who have never been part of the historical record. Providing students the opportunity to examine power, privilege, oppression, genocide, resilience, resistance, and hope is NOT antisemitic. The resources designed by Liberated Ethnic Studies engage multiple sources and lived experiences AND help students better understand the rich historical context of the four core groups of our discipline. https://lnkd.in/emFu-mi5

ACE is creating a new #highereducation Commission on Faith-Based Colleges and Universities. They are looking to use church installations as places for #hybridlearning #distancelearning and #onlinelearning. For the latter, the church might have higher-speed internet access.  They are looking to ways to lower the price of higher ed to students. "Antisemitism has been simmering on university campuses across Canada since she arrived at Carleton University in 2006, Deidre Butler said. It spikes whenever conflict in the Middle East erupts. Since the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel, anti-Jewish hate has become more 'brutal', said Butler, co-chair of a new group of Canadian academics pushing back against rising antisemitism on campuses. 'It’s been really, really hard...I have students who are coming into my classes already with a very deep belief in antisemitic lies', said Butler, director of the Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies at Carleton, and co-chair of the Network of Engaged Canadian Academics, or NECA. The group, a non-partisan group made up of Jews and non-Jews and inspired by a similar network in the U.S., says its stated mission is to protect academic freedom and ensure a 'robust and fair dialogue about Jewish identity and Israel' while pushing back against a rising tide of antisemitism. About 200 faculty members across 27 campuses have signed on, many of whom have witnessed 'troubling anti-Jewish rhetoric and actions', organizers said.   The hostility has been building over the last several decades, said NECA co-founder Cary Kogan, a clinical psychology professor at the University of Ottawa. 'People are entitled to discuss their points of view, but here we’re talking about things that cross the line into hate speech, things that cross the line into incitement of violence and into harassment of Jewish students, regardless of their positionality vis-a-vis Israel', Kogan said. 'We had people who were not experts on the conflict in the Middle East regurgitating a lot of problematic and inaccurate information, using their classroom as a pulpit to express their opinions outside their areas of expertise...there was a noticeable, what felt like an organized approach trying to de-legitimize Israel and trying to undermine discourse that could allow for multiple perspectives and fruitful dialogue, which is what the academy is about'.   While there are organizations that represent Jewish students, 'there was really no organization in Canada that was helping faculty manage these issues', Kogan said...Equity, diversity and inclusion policies have been implemented across Canadian campuses. But 'there really isn’t anything about Jewish identity in those', Kogan said. 'The exclusion of Jewish identity means there really is no remit for Jewish people on campus. An important read based on disturbing new data about the rising incidence of #antisemitism on college campuses. Leonard Saxe and his research team Brandeis University hwve dug in deeply and their findings in the post 10/7 environment’s wake are to say the least sobering! It will take significant leadership from faculty and educators across the US and abroad to rebuild the confidence that all students can be safe from bias, harassment and historically inaccurate interpretations of the conflicts in the Middle East.
