What are independent schools? As a parent exploring school options, you may come across the terms "independent schools" and "private schools." You may wonder wonder - what exactly do those mean? Here's a quick primer: Independent schools (also known as private schools) are not managed by the government or local authorities. They are funded through tuition fees paid by parents. They also receive private donations, endowments etc. Within the independent school sector, there are several different school types: Pre-preps: Feed into prep schools, from ages 3-7 Prep schools: Prepare students for entry into fee-paying senior schools. Ages 3-13 Day schools: Students go home after classes end Boarding schools: Provide accommodation and care for students alongside education. Choir schools: Attached to cathedrals/churches, train choristers. Independent schools have more flexibility over curriculum, teacher hiring and facilities. At Zartnir, we prioritize quality over quantity, which is why our Operation Director, Lilit Poghosyan, personally trains teachers who are interested in joining our team. During the training we: - introduce the teachers to our guiding principles, - provide them legal documents and rules to work with Zartnir, - give methodology on how to conduct the clubs, - show interactive tools to use during the discussions. After the training, teachers who decide to join Zartnir send us the exact number of how many children who are going to participate in our reading clubs as a confirmation of participation. Finally, after going through all these stages, we choose the appropriate book for each of the joined classes depending on the children’s ages and send the books to them. This is how life-changing cooperation starts for club member kids and thus for our new generation. “Do you mop in your house?” I asked one of my students this question this morning. In our school, we’re not only interested in our children’s academic performance. Our goal is to give these young ones a holistic education. This is why the kids sweep their classes everyday after school. Also, every morning, they mop the veranda floor in front of their classes. This is to teach them how to be responsible and hygienic. This morning, while a student was mopping the floor, I realised he did it so effortlessly. Hardly do I see his colleagues mop as he did. That was when I asked if he mopped in his house. His answer was affirmative. I encouraged him to keep it up. Most often, we say “Charity begins at home.” This is very true. You can never exhibit something you have never learnt. Our homes are the first agents of socialisation. As parents and guardians, we need to teach our young ones well and set good examples for them. The past two months have made me inquisitive about how parents and guardians nurture their young ones in their homes. Are you nurturing your young ones well? How do you correct them when they make mistakes? Do you model good behaviours for them? Do you teach them how to speak confidently and respectfully? Do you meet their emotional needs? Do you meet their financial needs? Training a child is not done only in school. It’s a partnership between the home and the school.
